The purpose of this study is to assume the series of Miscellaneous Play, The Life of Queen Shimchong, was written by Yeo Gyu-hyeong, and accordingly, reveal the meanings of the adaption. Even though Miscellaneous Play, The Life of Queen Shimchong is the only book written in Chinese characters, there have been few previous studies of it, and it has mostly only been considered briefly in the context of Yeo’s work The Story of Chunhyang. This is because it was the second creative work that changed to another genre, and it is not easy to consider it to be a new different version or to explain its status in Pansori literature. In an attempt to overcome these limits, this study first divided Songdongbon, previously known as the original source of Miscellaneous Play, The Life of Queen Shimchong, into 54 paragraphs and examined them. From this analysis, the affinity of Songdongbon with Miscellaneous Play, The Life of Queen Shimchong was confirmed. However, 32 paragraphs, or around 62% of the total, were abbreviated, expanded, or otherwise changed between Songdongbon and the play. Therefore, this study proceeded to review the phases of change, after excluding 130 versions of the play adapted later out of Panbon, Pilsabon, Hwaljabon and Changbon. As a result, the relationship with other Gyeongpan Series was shown, and differences indicated from Songdongbon in terms of several motives, such as ‘ the “naming of Shimchong ’,” ‘ the “Dreaming of Hwajuseung’ ”, and the “‘ Connection with Baengdeokeomi.”’Based on the revealed changes, the study then connects the individual recognition of Yeo Gyu-hyeong and the social atmosphere of the time, and discusses the intentions behind the adaption of the play. On this basis this, it revealed aspects of the of adaptation such as ‘ the removal of humor and reinforcement of the ideology of Confucianism ’, ‘the revelation of adaptation recognition based on rationalization ’, ‘ and the esta blishment of works adapting types of play. ’Because Miscellaneous Play, The Life of Queen Shimchong claims to support Changgeuk in type and follows the basic plot of Pansori, The Life of Shimchong, Miscellaneous Play, The Life of Queen Shimchong has a unique place in Changgeuk history or novel history of the novel history of The Life of Shimchong. When this work is viewed from the perspective of Changgeuk history as a text written in Chinese characters, it can be considered to have limits in terms of adapting a work from the miscellaneous play genre and to have difficulty completely accommodating its aesthetic aspect. However, it still shows a variety of aspects of adaptations of The Life of Shimchong in the 20th century and in addition, is the only text written in Chinese characters.

이 연구의 목적은 여규형의 저작인 <잡극 심청왕후전>의 계열을 추정하고 이에 따라 개작의 의미를 밝혀내는 것이다. <잡극 심청왕후전>은 <심청전>의 한문유일본임에도 불구하고 그간 연구가 다양하게 진행되지 않았고, 여규형의 <춘향전> 연구와 함께 언급되는 정도에 머물렀다. 그 이유로는 다른 장르로의 변환이 이루어진 2차 창작물이기 때문에 <심청전>의 새로운 이본으로 보기가 어렵거나, 판소리 문학에서의 위치를 설명하기가 용이하지 않았기 때문이다. 본고에서는 이러한 한계를 극복하고자 우선 <잡극 심청왕후전>과 기존의 저본으로 알려진 송동본을 54개의 대목으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 <잡극 심청왕후전>과 송동본의 친연성을 확인할 수 있었다. 대표적인 특징은 세세한 숫자의 일치이다. 그런데 <잡극 심청왕후전>의 54개의 대목 중 송동본과는 다르게 대목이 축약, 확장되거나, 기존의 내용에서 두드러지게 변개되는 장면들을 살펴보면 총 32개로, 전체의 대략 60%에 해당하는 대목이 달라졌다. 이에 <심청전>의 130여 종에 해당하는 판본, 필사본, 활자본, 창본 중, 개작시기가 후대인 본들을 제외하고 앞서 살펴본 변이 양상들을 검토해 보았다. 그 결과 ‘심청의 작명’, ‘화주승의 득몽’, ‘뺑덕어미와의 결연 양상’ 등 몇 가지 화소에서 송동본과는 다른 경판계 및 다른 본들과의 관련성을 증명해낼 수 있었다. 밝혀진 변이양상을 토대로 <잡극 심청왕후전>의 개작의도를 여규형의 개인적 의식뿐만 아니라 당대의 사회적 분위기와 연관시켜 논의해 보았다. 이를 통해 ‘해학성의 제거와 유교이념의 강화’, ‘합리적 사고에 입각한 개작의식의 발현’, ‘잡극의 형식을 차용한 작품의 설정’ 등의 개작의 의미를 밝혀내었다. <잡극 심청왕후전>은 형식적으로는 창극을 표방하고, 내용면에서는 판소리 <심청전>의 골자를 거의 그대로 따르고 있어, <심청전>의 창극사적 혹은 소설사적으로 독특한 위치에 놓이게 된다. 이 작품을 한문연본이라는 창극사적 관점에서 바라보면 잡극의 형식을 차용하면서도 그 미학적 지점까지는 완전히 수용하지 못했던 한계점을 지니는 작품이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 20세기 초 <심청전>의 다양한 개작양상을 보여주는 선례이며, 또 유일한 한문연본이라는 점에서 그 의의가 있다 하겠다.
