One of the core tasks of cognitive science is to clarify the question of how to build an viable architecture of cognitive system. In the course of answering to this question, some models have appeared since the advent of cognitive science. They are mainly the serial computer model of the computational approach, the parallel network model of the connectionist approach, the subsump- tion model of the embodied cognition, the autopoietic model of the enactivistic approach. Today, various models of cognitive systems are competing each other. In my opinion, when it comes to modelling of a cognitive system of special purpose but not of general purpose, they may compete against each other. But if the task is to model a cognitive system with (relative) general purpose, it might be better for them to move in the direction of mutual coexistence and harmony instead of competing against each other. That is, it is highly recommended for cognitive scientists to combine the various models of cognitive systems into an integrative cognitive system with general purpose. In fact, the factual history on the problems of cognitive science already shows that issues and problems that need to be solved, are different from each other from generation to generation and accordingly different models of cognitive system were introduced. Each descendant cognitive theories have brought even more effective solutions to the problems that the preceding theories have not yet taken into account. This is also the case for the embodied theory of cognition. Recently embodied theory of mind, which criticizes the internalist models of cognition, receives special attention among cognitive scientists. But the model of embodied cognitive science alone, in my opinion, is not enough to model a cognitive system with general purpose. That is to say, the embodied model of the cognitive system itself is not yet satisfactory as a general theory of cognition. It requires a reinforcement. For this purpose, I introduce and discuss the Varela’s autopoiesis model of enactive cognitive science critically and use the result of it for the deepening of the embodied cognitive theory. Here I propose my own model. Thereafter I present a short but principal answer to the question how to model a cognitive system of general purpose. The proposed answer tries to combine the various models of cognitive systems to a hybrid system -model on the basis of the revised model of embodied cognitive system. But this proposal is just a preliminary study that must be further scrutinized in the future.

인지과학의 중핵 과제 중 하나가 인지계의 모델을 제시하는 일이다. 이 과제를 해결하는 시도의 과정에서 인지과학은 태동 이후 계산주의 인지과학, 연결주의 인지과학, 체화주의 인지과학, 행위주의 인지과학 등을 낳았고 그리고 이 과정에서 직렬컴퓨터/논리계산주의 모델, 병렬컴퓨터/연결주의 모델, 지각-행동 및 개체-환경 연동의 체화인지모델(포섭구조 모델) 그리고 자기관계에 기반한 사이버네틱스 모델의 일종인 자가생산체계 모델 등이 제시되었다. 각 인지과학이론들은 각자 자신의 인지계 모델을 가지고 서로 각축을 벌이면서 패권다툼을 벌이고 있다. 필자의 견해로, 비록 그러한 모델들이 제반 인지현상들을 보편적으로 설명하고자 하는 취지에서 제시된 것들이긴 하지만, 실제에 있어서는 특수 용도의 인지계를 모델링하는 과제에 더 적합한 것으로 보인다. 그리고 그러한 맥락에서라면 그것들은 서로 경쟁할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 하지만 특수 용도가 아닌 범용적인 성질의 목적이라면, 헤게모니싸움보다는 상호 공존과 화합, 보완의 방향으로 나아가야 소기의 목적을 실현할 수 있을 것이라는 것이 필자의 생각이다. 그리고 범용 용도의 인지계를 디자인하기 위해서는 각 인지계 모델들을 적절한 방식으로 조합할 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 이를 위해서는 제3의 전략이 요구된다는 것이 필자의 생각이다. 사실 각 인지과학이론들이 해결하고자 하는 문제들은 각기 달랐고 그리고 그에 따라 서로 다른 인지계 모델들을 제시하였음은 이미 인지과학의 문제사가 내보여주고 있다. 후속하는 인지이론들은 선행하는 인지이론들이 미처 챙기지 못한 주제와 문제들을 추가로 고려하는 가운데 새로운 인지계 모델들을 제시해 왔다. 근래 들어서는 체화인지가 각광을 받고 있다. 하지만 현행 체화인지만으로는 범용 용도의 인지계를 모델링할 수는 없다는 것이 필자의 생각이다. 게다가 현행 체화인지가 그 자체 온전한 체화인지이론인지도 의문이다. 결국 현행 체화인지 자체도 보완이 필요한 것으로 보인다. 본고에서 필자는 여타 인지계의 구조를 다루면서도 체화인지이론을 심화시키고 있는 바렐라의 행위주의 인지과학을 끌어들여 체화인지를 심화시키되, 그의 이론을 비판적으로 논하고 보완작업을 병행하는 가운데 체화인지이론을 한층 더 업그레이드 하고자 한다. 그리고 다시 이 토대 위에서 여타 인지계 모델들을 추가로 장착하는 방법을 간단하게나마 언급함으로써 앞으로 범용용도의 인지계를, 원리적인 수준에서나마, 어떤 방향에서 모델링해야 할 것인지에 대해 힌트를 제시하고자 한다.
