How is the first philosophical work of I. Kant Thoughts on the True Estimation of Living Forces(original title: Gedanken von der wahren Schätzung der lebendigen Kräfte, 1747) to be properly interpreted? Based on the cognition that it must be regarded rather as a metaphysical than a physical text, this article will argue that it is necessary to read it precisely again regarding not only Kant’s own philosophical development, but also modern philosophy of substantial force since Leibniz. In a first step I will briefly survey the historical context of contrary metaphysical positions on substance and its essence, namely between the Cartesian metaphysics of two absolute different substances and the Leibnizian metaphysics of living monade and its force. Then I move to reconstruct some significant points of Kant’s theories on substance, force, space, motion, on relation between soul and body, and on harmony and perfection of the whole universe in the Estimation. And lastly I will suggest three possible perspectives of interpretation of Estimation that might be fruitful for its further investigation: perspective of enlightenment of self-convinced general reason, that of immanent development of Kant’s philosophical thought and that of modern philosophy of substantial force.

칸트가 1747년 집필한 처녀작 『활력의 올바른 측정에 관한 고찰』은 어떤 저작일까? 단지 젊은 실체 형이상학자가 힘의 측정이라는 물리학적 문제를 해결하기 위해 쓴 저작일까? 본고는 『측정』이 겉보기와 달리 그 사상적인 지향점과 실질적인 내용에서 볼 때, 근본적으로 ‘형이상학적’ 저작이라는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 이에 따라 본고는 먼저 『측정』의 사상적 배경이 되고 있는 근대철학사의 맥락을 살펴본다. 특히 형이상학적 실체를 둘러싼 데카르트와 라이프니츠의 대립된 구도에서 『측정』이 어떤 고유한 이론적 입장을 취하고 있는가를 분석해 본다. 이어서 본고는 『측정』에 개진된 실체, 힘, 공간, 운동에 관한 이론, 이와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있는 영혼과 육체의 관계의 문제, 아울러 공간의 존재론적 근원에 대한 이론, 우주 전체의 완전성에 대한 사변적 전망 등을 재구성해 볼 것이다. 마지막 결론 부분에서는 『측정』을 앞으로 연구할 때, 보편적 이성의 계몽주의, 칸트 사유의 내재적 발전, 근대철학에서 자발적 힘의 철학의 전개 등의 관점이 중요하다는 점을 강조한다.
