Communication technology making rapid progress, books still have an lasting effect on our lives. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the historical tradition of books from the viewpoint of bookbinding, and to analyze the techniques of bookbinding.The history of books is just that of bookbinding, and bookbinding has meant beyond structure of the book or physical aspect of the book. Especially, possessing gorgeous and richly-decorated books in medieval Europe was considered as a symbol of social status.In the occident, restoration and conservation of old books has been executed, but related books and discussion about bookart or bookbinding has rarely existed in Korea.This paper deals with traditional methods of handmade bookbinding, not modern mechanical bookbinding. (Based on general method,) Through many binding techniques of Codex, this paper introduces the basic techniques and principles of bookbinding.

커뮤니케이션 기술의 비약적인 발전에도 불구하고, 책은 여전히 우리 생활과 삶에 지속적인 영향력을 행사하고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 책의 역사적 전통을 '북바인딩'관점에서 살펴보고, 기법적인 측면을 분석해보는데 그목적이 있다. 책의 역사가 곧 북바인딩의 역사라 할만큼 '북바인딩'은 책의 구조와 물리적인 측면이상의 중요한 역할을 담당해 왔다. 특히 유럽 중세의 호화로운 책들은 책의 소유가 곧 사회적 지위를 상징할 만큼 화려하게 장식되기도 했다. 상대적으로 책을 매개로한 기록과 보전의 역사가 잘 정리되어온 서양의 경우, 오래된 책의 복원과 보전까지 책에 관한 전통의 명맥이 잘 유지되고 있다. 하지만, 북아트나 북바인딩 관련서적이나 논의는 국내에서는 상대적으로 많지 않은 실정이다. 본 논문은 동서양의 북바인딩 방법론을 담고 있다. 이것은 현대의 기계식제본이 아닌 핸드메이드 바인딩에 관한 기술적 연구이다. 동?U서양을 막론하고 각 나라마다, 또는 지역마다 책을 엮는 방법이 조금씩 다르게 발전해 왔다. 본 논문에서는 일반적으로 많이 사용되는 방법을 기초로하여 코덱스(Codex)의 여러 바인딩 기법을 연구하여 북바인딩에 관한 체계적인 접근을 모색함으로써 '북아트' 혹은 '북바인딩'을 연구하거나 공부하는 사람들에게 '북바인딩'의 기본 원리와 방법을 소개하고자 한다.
