In a historiography of the British antislavery movement, the black abolitionists have been largely ignored. It is partly because they published a small number of essays and the white campaigners’ helps were key to their antislavery achievements. This research attempts to give due importance to the Black abolitionists’ impact on the history of the antislavery movement. The disruption and conflict caused by the American Revolution undermined the moral authority of the British Empire and formed the atmosphere in which opponents of slavery, the most noticeable ‘vice’, could gain moral prestige; thus, the antislavery argument became more useful in the late eighteenth century. In this context, a number of African writers against slavery and the slave trade appeared. Sancho, Cugoano and Equiano formally condemned slavery and several key themes reflecting inconsistency between slavery and Christian principles repeatedly appeared in their writings: humanity, benevolence and justice. They voiced similar discourse with their white counterparts but had a character of their own; the black abolitionists’ clear opposition to slavery reflects the intensity of antislavery ideology; harmonizing with the white abolitionist discourse, African writers were able to borrow fame and authority of the white campaigners while the white writers also established their credibility as their assertions were supported by African writers’ personal experience. Sancho, Cugoano and Equiano actively participated in the political movement for abolition as well. Most of all, they presented a vision of universal emancipation through education for African slaves and the establishment of bilateral trade relations with Africa. It demonstrates that they were not silent students but active participants with personal initiatives. A full and ample account of the black abolitionists’ writings and activities will broaden the scope of our understanding of the rise and development of the British antislavery movement in the late eighteenth century.
