Joseph-Arthur de Gobineau is well known as one of the nineteenth century’s most important theorist about racism, so called “father of racist theories”. This article examines his views and discourses and also as points of reference for thinking through the relations of modernity, aristocratism, and Western discourses about “other” peoples in the Essai sur l’inégalité des races humaines (1853). “Racism” implies a presumption of racial superiority and a harmful intent, is also used to describe racial policy but “racialism” indicate a strong interest in matters of race without the presumption of superiority or the desire to cause harm to others. In this point of view, this article is intended to insist that Gobineau’s theory is based on the racialism. To understand Essai, it is essential to recognize that is was composed in the aftermath of th 1848 revolutions. After rapid changes of french society Gobineau confirmed in him a profound disdain for democracy, liberalism, and, above all, popular revolution. Essai was not the general discourse of race differences, but rather the central role assigned to racial mixture as the principle for understanding the rise and decline of the world’s civilizations. For him, typical characteristics of black and yellow were “the masses” and “Revolution”.

본 논문은 근대 생물학적 인종주의의 ‘선구적’ 저작으로 평가받는 고비노의 『인종불평등론』을 중심으로 고비노의 인종론이 가지는 특성을 살펴보고 프랑스와 독일에서 그의 인종론이 어떻게 전유되어 왔는지 밝힌다. 이것은 오늘날 일반적으로 생각되는 인종주의와 염세적 낭만주의의 영향으로 형성된 고비노의 인종론이 가지는 차이와 거리를 보여 준다. 더불어 유럽 이외의 다양한 지역에 거주하는 ‘인종’들에 대한 19세기 프랑스의 인종론을 살펴봄으로써 중국, 일본, 조선을 포함한 ‘극동아시아’에 거주하는 사람들, 즉 황인종에 투사하였던 특성과 의미를 찾아본다. 고비노는 『인종불평등론』에서 인종을 중심으로 생물학적 유물론, 문화적 염세주의, 종말론적 역사관을 혼합하였다. 다시 말해 『인종불평등론』은 18세기 절대왕정에 맞서 프랑스 귀족의 정치적 정당화를 시도한 불랭빌리에로 대표되는 귀족주의적 인종관, 생물학적 인종 분류에 기여한 근대 인류학, 인도유럽어족과 셈어족을 구분했던 언어학 등 당대의 여러 다양한 분야의 학문적 성과들을 종합하려 한 시도였다. 이러한 측면에서 이 글은 인종주의자이기보다는 인종론자로서의 고비노의 사상을 검토한다.
