The purpose of this paper is what lesbian was in 18th century England and who they are. Especially I tried to prove out the reason why the Bluestocking was regarded as a the lesbian. So the main content was what kind of relationship which the Bluestocking had done. To do this, I inspected their letters in the concrete. Of Course, It was knotty problem of how we might prove the intellects of the age was a lesbian or not. But this is not my subject matter and their relations was such that I can’t prove. Instead of using the word ‘lesbian’, there was the ‘Romantic Friendship’ in the 18th century. It was the relation of women who prefer the friendship than love, a woman’s bond than a conjugal love. At that time, there was no punishment for ‘lesbian’ couple that means in modern sense of sexual abuse. Most of the Bluestocking who don’t marry lived together with sharing a house, even they had equal rights of property and inheritance. If they loved each together and exchanged love letters, they were not lesbian, if ever, in modern meanings. I come to a conclusion that they had chosen the cohabitation as an alternative life which would be known as ‘Boston Marriage’. The society and the intellectuals in 18th century England thought the women’s, of course not men’s, relation with romantic friendship was not harmful and even sinful. You will know the reason why. Therefore, I have a hypothesis that they who enjoy the relation of Romantic Friendship might be a progenitor of the ‘Boston Marriage’ in 19th century America.

이 글은 18세기 영국에서 레즈비언의 실체, 그리고 그들에 대한 지식인 여성들을 비롯한 일부의 시각을 다룬다. 또한 블루스타킹 서클로 알려진 지식인 여성들은 그 시대 ‘레즈비언’으로 인식되기도 하였다. 우선 밝혀 두는 것은 레즈비언은 19세기 말 특정 관계의 여성 섹슈얼리티를 표현하는 단어였으며, 18세기에는 ‘로맨틱 우정’이라는 용어로 여성의 특별한(?) 관계를 용인했고, 설사 애정 행각이 있다고 해도 사회적 처벌의 대상도 아니었다는 점이다. 그럼에도 블루스타킹을 비롯한 여성들의 로맨틱 우정이라는 관계가 특별히 사회의 관심을 끈 것은 그들이 자발적으로 여성 연대 기구를 설립하고자 한 노력 때문이었다. 그들은 편지와 저작 들에서 공공연히 남성 혐오와 결혼 혐오를 드러냈고 여성들끼리의 진정한 우정을 강조하였다. 그중엔 물론 지나친 여성 우정에 집착한 사람들도 있었겠지만, 대부분은 성적 정숙을 모토로 내걸었고 귀족이나 국교도의 딸들로서 현재적 의미의 레즈비언 관계에 대해서도 혐오 이상의 감정을 지니지 않았던 것으로 보인다. 블루스타킹의 여성 연대에 대한 소망이 그들끼리의 동거로 구체화되었고, 이들의 동거는 19세기 말 여성들이 성적 관계가 없으면서 동거했던 ‘보스턴 결혼’의 전례라고 이해될 수 있을 것이다. 결혼과 출산이 여성의 의무라는 사회적 압력을 벗어나기 위해, 그들은 결혼의 대안으로서의 여성 연대, 즉 보스턴 결혼을 스스로 택한 지식인 여성들이었다고 생각된다.
