This paper attempts to adduce that the Book of Apocalypse of St. John deals with the theology of human rights, even though the eschatological hope in this book plays a central role. From the point of view of resistance literature most visions in the Book of the Apocalypse of St. John can be interpreted such as declaration for fundamental human rights, the right of human dignity, and social equality of the lower class and the upper class. The visions, which are used as the means of the understanding and the interpretation of a reality of the seven churches in Asia explain the social and economical facts; the great abundance of riches and luxuries which the higher classes enjoyed during the reign of Roman Imperial rule reflected both the brutal suppression of the colonies and the exploitation of the under classes. In fact the great wealth came at the great cost of the under classes. Using the visions of Count-Reality, the Book of Revelation of St. John appreciates ruling system Pax-Romana as a System of exploitation and a satanic system and violent system against human rights and the order of creation. The last Book evaluates the reality very negative from the perspective of the under classes. Therefore the Book of the Apocalypse of St. John makes it clear that this is a peace determined from above, decided by the center of power of Pax-Romana. Thus, this peace was gained by war and military power, which were empowered the upper classes at the cost of the under classes. And the visions of the millenium and a new heaven and a new earth as a counterculture community point out the Utopia of realization of human rights to discrimination. There is a need for a civil rights movement and the resistance against the violence and discrimination for the change of political order in regard to human rights. The theology of the Revelation aims for the Counter-Reality and the Contrast Society.

요한계시록이 우리들에게 주고자 하는 중요한 신학적인 내용이 핍박을 당하고 있는 소아시아 일곱 교회들에게 종말론적인 희망을 제시하면서, 고통스런 현실 속에서 신앙을 신실하게 지켜가도록 권면하기 위해서 기록된 문서라는 점을 부정할 수 없지만, 요한계시록의 저항문서적인 특징을 전제로 요한계시록 안에 사용된 환상들을 해석한다면, 요한계시록은 자기시대의 지배체제인 Pax-Romana의 사탄적인 본질을 인식하고 폭로해 주는 인권신학적인 입장에서 해석될 수도 있다. 현실인식 수단으로서 사용된 환상들을 통해서 요한계시록은 소아시아 일곱 교회가 매일 경험하고 있는 현실이 정치적, 군사적, 경제적인 착취 시스템이며, 종교적으로는 로마제국의 황제를 신격화하는 반기독교적인 지배체제라는 사실을 폭로하고 있다. 특히 요한계시록은 로마제국의 주변부에 속하는 소아시아 지역의 사회경제적 현실과 로마제국의 중심부에 살고 있는 상층부의 사치스러운 삶의 모습을 착취와 지배의 구도 속에서 환상을 통해서 설명하고 있으며, Pax-Romana라는 지배체제가 평화를 가장한 폭력적이고 반인권적인 지배체제라는 사실을 논증하며 천년왕국과 새 하늘과 새 땅에 대한 환상을 근거로 더 이상 억울하게 눈물을 흘리지 않아도 되는 보편적 인권이 실현되는 대조사회를 지향하며 현실에 대한 저항을 격려한다. 그리고 요한계시록은 인권이 파괴된 횡적 공동체를 세워가기 위해서 ‘아래로부터-주변부로부터의 시각’에서 현실적인 지배체제를 인식하고, 모든 이웃을 하나님의 형상을 소유한 한 형제로 간주하며 보편적 인권을 모든 사람들에게 적용하는 책임사회에 대한 윤리적 요청이 강조하고 있다. 요한계시록에 나타난 천년왕국과 새 하늘과 새 땅의 환상을 통해서 눈물과 죽음을 유발시키는 현재의 인권유린 상황을 단절하고 더 이상 눈물을 흘리지 않아도 되는 대조사회에 대한 환상은 우리들로 하여금 불의한 현실에 대한 저항을 요구한다. 특히 천년왕국의 환상을 통해서 지배 없는 지배체제를 이루기 위해 힘의 추구가 아니라 힘의 분배를 요구하는 요한계시록의 인권신학적인 규범은 기존의 지배적이고 불의한 인권질서에 대한 저항이며 혁명이며, 또한 평등권이 보장되는 횡적 공동체와 보편적 책임공동체를 지향한다. 그리고 이런 대조사회가 하늘나라에서 이루어지는 것이 아니라 지금 여기서 이루어지기 때문에 새 예루살렘이 하늘에서 지상으로 내려온다고 요한계시록은 진술한다.
