Making a right decision is an important thing for Christian living in the diversified modern world. This paper discusses the principles of spiritual discernment in Jonathan Edwards' A Treatise concerning Religious Affections. Edwards was concerned about whether a certain spiritual experiences came from the Holy Spirit or not, that is, he was interested in the issues on spiritual discernment during the Great Awakening. Therefore, he suggested the twelve uncertain signs that did not belong to the Holy Spirit. Also he proposed the twelve certain signs that were evidently belong to the Holy Spirit. The concept developed from his preaching, "A Divine and Supernatural Light" in 1734 was also presented in Religious Affections. Finally, exploring the structure and concept of affection in the A Treatise concerning Religious Affections, he asserted that affection was not a feeling but a source of action. In addition, he emphasized the importance of affection as the object of discernment. He also systemized the concept of affection by merging a feeling and the will, and urged to extend spiritual experiences into Christian's practice. The concept of affection and the signs of spiritual discernment in Jonathan Edwards contributed to giving standards for Christians living in the modern world.

다원화된 현대사회에서 하나님의 뜻을 분별하여 올바른 결정을 내리는 일은 그리스도인들에게 매우 중요한 일이다. 본 논문에서는 조나단 에드워즈의『신앙 감정론』을 중심으로 영적분별의 원칙을 다루고자 하였다. 에드워즈는 대각성운동의 영향으로 많은 영적 체험이 일어난 시대적 상황 속에서 그 체험들이 성령으로부터 오는 진정한 영적인 체험인지 그렇지 않은지 분별하는 기준에 대하여 많은 관심을 갖고 있었다. 에드워즈가 성령의 역사라고 단정할 수 없다고 본 12가지 불확실한 표지들과 성령의 역사임이 분명한 12가지 확실한 표지들을 살펴봄으로써 ‘신앙 감정론’이 그의 1734년 설교 『신적이고 영적인 빛』의 기본 개념들을 더욱 발전시켰다는 점을 논증하였다. 마지막으로 『신앙 감정론』의 구조와 정서의 개념을 살펴보면서 에드워즈가 정서란 단지 감정이 아니라 행위의 원천임을 역설하고 있으며, 분별의 대상으로서 정서의 중요성을 인지하도록 이끌어 주고 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 그는 감정과 의지를 묶어서 정서라는 개념으로 체계화 하였으며, 영적 경험의 중요성과 더불어 이를 잘 분별하여 기독교적 실천으로까지 확장 또는 승화되어야 한다는 것을 알려주었다. 그가 제시한 정서의 개념과 분별의 표지가 현대를 살아가는 그리스도인들에게 매우 중요한 기준점을 준다고 할 수 있다.
