A Study on Translation of Engagement Markers from English into Korean : the Case of a Wall Street Journal Opinion Text

This study aims to explore differences in the use of linguistic resources to mark engagement between English persuasive text and its Korean translation, and establish valid hypotheses for future studies. To achieve this, it analyzes the ways how engagement markers in a persuasive English text are translated into Korean. Using the 2005 engagement model of Martin & White, this study analyzes a Wall Street Journal opinion text and its Korean translation. First, engagement markers in the ST are identified. Then, the translation of those markers is examined to identify any revealing trends or notable differences. Also the target Korean text is further analyzed using the same engagement model to identify any additional engagement markers that are absent in the source text. The result shows that the linguistic resources to mark engagement in the target text are less varied than those used in its English counterpart. Also, the target text tends to use more engagement markers that are dialogically contracting rather than expanding. The same tendencies are also found in a Korean persuasive text taken from JoongAng Daily. Further analysis may be required to confirm whether the trends hold true in larger samples, and to find out what factors contribute to the tendencies.
