The purpose of this study is to conduct a contrastive analysis of the Korean vowel system and that of Uzbekistan. The result of which is to be used for teaching Korean pronunciation to Uzbekistan learners more effectively and studying differences between the vowel system of Korean and that of Uzbek. Firstly, for that purpose, the simple vowel systems of both languages were compared via IPA(International Phonetic Alphabet). As a result, each IPA symbol of Korean /ㅣ, ㅜ, ㅔ, ㅗ/ was corresponded to that of Uzbek /i, u, e, o'/ respectively. However, the Korean vowels /ㅐ, ㅟ, ㅚ, ㅡ, ㅓ, ㅏ/ and Uzbek vowels /o, a/ had no equivalent IPA symbol to each other. Subsequently, the formants of monophthongs were contrastively analyzed via experimental phonetics. The results showed that only Korean /ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅐ/ and Uzbek /o, u, e/ were equivalent vowels. In conclusion, the result of this study indicated that teaching pronunciation of Korean vowels via IPA is problematic, and then proposed an alternate way for teaching pronunciation of Korean monophthongs.
