The purpose of this study is: first, to introduce total 33 hand-written letters of Maurice Courant to Victor Collin de Plancy housed in the Document Room of French Foreign Ministry; and second, to minutely examine the portrayals of Courant within the letters. Considering the studies on Korea by Courant, his key backgrounds and the places he wrote the letters, the letters of Courant can be categorized into three time periods : ① the 11 letters he wrote during the time he was working in Seoul, Korea (July 3, 1891～February 25th, 1892); ② the 10 letters he wrote during the time he worked in China and Japan as a interpreter, and then, finally settled in 3rd France after choosing to become a professional scholar (June 17th, 1892～December 18th, 1899); and ③ the 12 letters he wrote during the time he was appointed as a Chinese professor at University of Lyon after failing to attain a position at Institut Nationale des Langues et Civilisation 0rientales (July 14th, 1902～April 24th, 1921.) In the letters during the time period ①, the process of Courant, a 'young diplomat' placed in the mysterious land in the Far east, studying classical literatures of Korea under help of Plancy is portrayed. In the letters during the time period ②, the process of Courant's becoming an 'expert of Korean study,' who can produce modern knowledge from classical literature of Korea, through his publication of Bibliographie Coréenne Volume 1～3. Unfortunately, Courant's visions in Korean Study were not substantialized into a new writing comparable to Bibliographie Coréenne. After all, the fall of Korean Empire had eliminated all chances for him to materialize the potentials of Korean classics he had discovered. However, the potentials of Korean civilization that was not realized on the ground of 'writings of Korean study=modern knowledge' and the horizontal perspective on a unfamiliar subject that is Korean culture presented by Courant are still inherent in the letters during the time period ② and ③ because, the spirit of the young scholar, who longed to study and write about Korean study in a mature perspective of an orientalist can be found in those letters. In those letters are the portrayals of young Courant as a diplomat and as a scholar of Chinese or Japanese study that could not be found from reading Bibliographie Coréenne. Thus, the three portrayals of Courant in his letters are a portrait of a scholar of Korean study during the time when Korean study was systematically and academically absent, and at the same time, a spirit of a young scholar of Korean study.

본고의 목적은 첫째, 프랑스외무부 문서고에 소장된 모리스 쿠랑(Maurice Courant)이 콜랭드 플랑시(Victor Collin de Plancy)에게 보낸 육필서한 33 종 전반을 학계에 소개하는 것이다. 둘째, 그 속에 새겨져 있는 쿠랑의 초상을 면 밀히 재구해보는 것이다. 쿠랑의 한국학 논저와 그의 중요한 이력 그리고 그가 서한을 보냈던 장소를 겹쳐볼 경우, 쿠랑의 서한은 크게 세 시기로 나누어서 살펴볼 수 있다. ① 쿠랑이 한국 서울에서 근무하던 때(1891.7.3.～1892.2.25.)에 보 낸 11종의 서한, ② 쿠랑이 통역관으로 중국, 일본 등에서 근무하다가 결국 전문 적인 학자의 길을 선택하여 프랑스에 정착하게 된 과정 속(1892.6.17.～ 1899.12.18.)에 보낸 10종의 서한, ③ 동양어학교 교수임용이 좌절된 이후 리옹 대학에 새로운 활로를 모색하고 결국 중국어과 교수로 임용되어 활동한 과정 속 (1902.7.14.～1921.4.24.)에 보낸 12종의 서한이다. ①의 서한들에는 극동 미지의 땅에 배치된 ‘젊은 외교관’ 쿠랑이 플랑시의 도움 을 받아 한국의 서적과 그 고전세계를 연구하는 과정이 보이며, ②의 서한들에는 쿠랑이 한국서지 1～3권을 홀로 출간해나가며 한국의 문헌자료를 엮어 근대지 식을 창출할 수 있는 ‘한국학 전문가’로 성장하는 모습이 담겨져 있다. 물론 쿠랑의 한국학 기획은 불행히도 한국서지와 대등한 규모의 새로운 저술로는 구현되지 못했다. 무엇보다 ‘대한제국의 멸망’이란 사건은 그가 발견한 한국고전의 가능성을 구현할 길을 차단한 셈이기 때문이다. 그렇지만 이렇듯 ‘한국학 저술=근대적 지 식’이라는 층위에서 구현되지 못한 한국문명의 가능성, 쿠랑이 보여준 낯선 한국 문화에 관한 수평적 시선을 ②와 ③의 서한 속에서 발견할 수 있다. 그 속에는 성 숙한 동양학자의 시선에서 한국학 연구와 논저집필을 염원했던 젊은 한국학자의 영혼이 담겨져 있기 때문이다. 이는 한국서지만으로는 발견할 수 없는 쿠랑의 모습으로, 때로는 외교관으로 때로는 중국․일본학자로 보이는 프랑스외무성문서 고에 잠들어 있던 젊은 한국학자의 초상이다. 쿠랑의 서한문에 담긴 그의 세 가지 초상은 한국학이 제도적이며 학술적으로 부재했던 시기 한국학자의 초상이며 동 시에 우리가 복원해야 될 젊은 한국학자의 영혼이었던 것이다.
