Korea faces a huge challenge with their aging population, driven by longer lifetimes and low birthrates. This phenomenon is reflected in the age dependency ratio. According to Statistics Korea, each elderly person will depend on 1.2 person in 2016. With the lack of family caregivers, the elderly are moving to long-term care centers where they are not able to live independently. However, long-term care for old parents was traditionally considered a family duty to be performed within the home, and till recently, placing old parents in a nursing home was out of the question. When families consider placing their elderly into a nursing home, the decision-making process is deeply rooted in at least two factors: filial piety and family-centered culture. These values may prevent the family from disclosing their burden to others outside the family so that seeking help becomes extremely difficult. This barrier to receiving help, in turn, may lead to internal conflicts during which family members hurt each other through anger, frustration, helplessness, hopelessness, and resentment. Despite this urgent situation, pastoral care offered by local churches to frail elderly and their families is very limited. For those who are frail and their families, new approaches to aging ministry must be explored. This article discusses such new approaches, including how to support frail elderly and their family, ministry of death and dying and ministry for caregivers.

한국 사회는 가족 제도의 변화와 함께 저출산, 고령화현상으로 노인 부양이 라고 하는 전통적인 덕목이 도전받고 있다. 지금의 노인 세대는 자녀 양육에 혼신을 다하느라 노후대책을 마련하지 못한 채 변화된 사회 구조와 가족 구조 의 사각지대로 밀리기 쉬운 세대이다. 또한 사회적으로 노후대책의 충분한 조 치가 마련되지 않은 상황 속에서 노부모에 대한 부양의 부담으로부터 자유로 울 수 없는 성인 자녀들이 가지는 부담감 역시 눈여겨 볼 부분이다. 하지만 노부모를 요양시설에 모시기 위한 결정 과정에 대한 토픽은 한국 교 회에서 거의 논의되어 오지 않았다. 효에 대한 책임감과 노부모를 모시는 한국 전통 문화의 스타일은 노부모를 모시고 있는 가정들이 외부의 지원과 조언을 구하는 것을 어렵게 하고 있다. 이들은 외부로부터의 조언을 구하는 것만 주저 하는 것이 아니라 가족 내에서도 이 주제를 회피한다. 그러다가 결국은 마지막 순간에 충분한 준비 없이 성급한 결정을 내리며 가족 간의 갈등 상황으로 몰리 게 된다. 본 논문은 한국 사회가 진통을 겪고 있는 인구학적 변화와 가족 제도 의 변화를 중심으로 이에 따른 노인 부양 문제, 특히 요양시설 입주 과정에서 겪게 되는 가족 간의 갈등을 조명해 보고 노인과 노인 부양가족에 대한 목회적 돌봄에 대해서 모색해 보고자 한다.
