In this paper, I show the usefulness of Peircean semiotics ininvestigating the relationship between human and space and inresearching human spatial knowledge and action. The theory can shedlight on the process of establishing spatial knowledge from spatialperception, and the transition mechanism between spatial knowledgeand action. I compare space syntax, the theory and methodology forspatial study, with Peircean Semiotics. Literatures on space syntaxclaims that spatial configuration can directly influence how people canlearn spatial knowledge and use space. However, this allocentricperspective has limitations when it comes to explaining the existenceof spatial representations. Peircean Semiotics accounts for thesephenomena through “habit of action,” the spatial knowledge madethrough accumulated spatial actions. In general, different cultures havedissimilar patterns of action. However, in terms of bodily state, it ispossible to detect the analogous spatial action among diverseindividuals and cultures. This research reveals that human beings donot respond passively to given spatial environments but rather form asolid relationship with space by shifting and using spatial informationdepending on their habit of action.

본 연구는 공간정보가 공간 지식 및 행위로 변환되는 과정을 분석하였다. 연구의 진행을 위해서 우선 환경중심적인 관점을 취하고있는 기존의 공간이론인 공간 통사론의 연구를 검토하고 한계를살펴보았다. 그리고 이 한계를 극복하기 위한 대안적 이론으로서퍼스 기호학의 습관 개념을 차용하여 주체 특징적인 현상들을 설명하였다. 공간 통사론의 연구는 공간 구성이 인간이 공간을 배우고, 사용하는데 직접적인 영향을 미친다고 주장했으나, 사람들이재현해 낸 공간표상이 왜곡되는 이유, 개인이나 문화권마다 공간재현이 다른 이유를 설명하는데 한계를 보였다. 퍼스 기호학은 이러한 현상이 발생하는 이유를 축적된 행위를 통해 형성된 공간지식, 즉 행위의 습관의 영향으로 설명했다. 행위는 사람마다 그리고문화마다 다르지만, 신체 사용 양상에 있어서는 동질적인 경향을보이므로 공간 활용의 차이적인 현상 및 동일한 공간 수행 능력을설명해 줄 수 있다. 이와 같은 결과는 인간이 외부환경에 수동적으로 반응하는 것이 아니라, 정보를 지식으로 전환하고 활용하면서 능동적이며 상호적인 관계를 맺고 있음을 보여준다.
