청동기시대의 석기는 구석기시대 및 신석기시대에 비하여 다양한 형태로 확인된다. 앞선 시기에 비하여 청동기시대는 ‘타격’ 이라는 기법과 ‘마연’ 이라는 석기제작기법 적용이 활발해지면서, 생활용구를 비롯하 여 가공구 등의 다양한 형태의 석기가 출현하여 일반화되는 시기이다. 다시 말해, 이와 같이 ‘마연’이라는 석기제작기법이 일반화되어 석기가 제작되었으며, ‘타격’이라는 제작기법은 1차적인 석기의 형태를 만들 거나 본래의 기능면에 적용된 예가 줄어드는 것으로 인식되는 시기이다. 하지만 ‘타격’이라는 기술은 석기의 기능적인 부분에서 중요한 체계로서 자리 잡고 있으며, 석기를 제작하 는 데 있어 하나의 과정이 아닌 목적에 의한 적용이라는 측면에서 간과해서는 안 될 부분이다. 본고에서 는 호남지역에서 출토된 석기의 관찰과 실험을 통해 타격흔적의 형태적 측면 이외의 기능적 부분에 대한 접근을 시도하였으며, 이 과정에서 석기를 사용하기 위한 기능으로서의 타격기술이 적용되었음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 타격기술체계에 대하여 마제석기를 제작하기 위한 1차적 행위에 불과한 소모성 산물이라고 상정 한다면 큰 의미를 가지지 못하겠지만, 타격을 통해 제작된 기능적 특징을 가지는 석기 및 미완성석기 등 을 통해 ‘타격’이라는 기술의 적용이 청동기시대까지 이어지면서 중요한 역할을 했던 것으로 판단된다. 이와 같은 관찰을 통해 석기에서 관찰되는 타격흔은 석기의 용도가 상정된 경우 이에 대한 세부적인 분류 를 가능하게 할 수도 있으며, 석기를 사용한 사람들에 대한 기술체계에 대한 인식 역시 추정 가능할 것으 로 생각된다. 또한 용도가 명확하지 않은 석기의 경우 어떻게 석기를 사용했는지에 대한 다양한 자료를 제공해 줄 수 있기 때문에 석기의 관찰과 분석에 있어 타격흔에 대한 관심이 높아져야 할 것이다.
