The purpose of this essay is to critically review whether it is theoretically proper to interpret the so-called “Asian values” which have contributed to the rapid economic development in East Asia, as the functional equivalent to the Protestant ethic. To do this, the essay first presents a brief survey of Asian values which have been perceived in the Western civilization since ancient times and also asserted by the contemporary East Asians in reaction to the modern Western civilization, Then, the distinction between the “pristine modernization” and the “secondary modernization” is made to show that the historical context in which Asian values made contribution to the capitalist economic development is different from that in which the Protestant Ethic had done in the West. On the basis of this distinction the roles which the Protestant ethic and the Asian values played in capitalist industrialization in the West and East Asia respectively are compared and contrasted.
