It is clear that Roberto Bolaño, who has persistently dug into the evil ofthe contemporary world through his literary works such as Estrella distante,Nocturno de Chile, 2666, etc., was aware of colonialism as a dark side ofmodernity. Los detectives salvajes, which presents the social pathology of theliterary world by configuring the nomadic life and melancholic adventure ofperipheral writers, “realvisceralistas” in the novel, possesses same criticalconsciousness. In that context, this article analyzes how Bolaño problematizesthe parasitic relationship between political power and the society of intellectualstrapped, despite the postcolonial events of the Mexican Revolution, by theEurocentrism of the 1920s, criticizes the subalternity of knowledge whichgenerated and strengthened the centre-peripherymodel inMexican society, andpropounds the existence of other life-text as an uncertain possibility. This workalso confirms that Bolaño suggests that the essential nature of occidentalmodernity is based on colonial barbarity.

『먼 별』, 『칠레의 밤』, 『2666』 등의 작품에서 명쾌하게 드러나듯, 로베르또 볼라뇨는 자신의 문학 전반에서 끊임없이 현대사회의 악을 추적한 작가이다. 볼라뇨가 그러한 문학을 추구한데는 근대성의 어두운 이면으로서의 식민성을 인식하고 있었기 때문이다. 주변부 작가들의삶과 모험을 다루며 (문학)세계의 사회적 병리를 과감하게 파고드는 『야만스러운 탐정들』 또한그러한 문제의식과 궤를 같이하는 작품이다. 이에 본 논문은 볼라뇨가 『야만스러운 탐정들』을통해 멕시코혁명 이후의 지식(인)과 국가권력의 상호 기생적 관계를 폭로함과 동시에 멕시코지식인 사회가 유럽중심주의적 사유에서 벗어나지 못했으며 그러한 지식의 종속성이 멕시코사회 내부에 중심-주변 구조를 구축, 강화, 재생산했음을 비판하고 있음을 분석하고 있다. 또한 볼라뇨가 멕시코 지식(인) 세계의 역사적 컨텍스트를 비판적으로 접근함으로써 서구 근대성의 본질적 특성을 식민적 야만성으로 간주하고 있으며, 그 야만성으로 인해 역사에서 배제된주변부가 또 다른 삶-텍스트에 대한 불확정적 가능성으로 제시되고 있음을 확인하고 있다.
