This research discusses the historical and cultural meaning of Dance Film while observing their flow and characteristics from diachronic and synchronic angles：by comparing and contrasting by categories of monochrome-silent film era and sound-colored film era. The study revealed that Dance Film not only is a method of documenting dances from the age of time, but also one of the most significant mechanism to go about decoding a dance culture.

본 연구에서는 통시적, 공시적으로 무용영화의 흐름과 특징을 살펴보았고, 무용영화의 기록적, 역사․문화적 의미를 논의했다. 구체적으로는 연대기별로 나누어 무성․무색영화 시대와 유성․유색영화시대의 영화무용과 극영화무용의 흐름과 특징을 살펴보았다. 연구결과 나타난 무용영화의 의미는 영상기록매체, 무용학 연구의 보조매체, 새로운 장르 매체, 문화 읽기 및 소통 매체, 대중화 확장 매체 등으로 과거, 현재, 미래의 춤을 기록하고, 춤 역사를 연구하며, 춤 문화를 읽을 수 있는 하나의 장르로서 큰 의미를 지니고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
