The purpose of this study was to explore the systematic and practical character education plan focusing on the positive character development of children in elementary school counseling areas. For this purpose first the concept of character education and the direction of the character education to overcome the limitations of existing character education was considered. Second, association between the concept of character strengths and character education was examined, and it was suggested that an approach using character strengths could overcome the limitations of existing character education. Third, the implications of recent studies verified the effects of character strengths-based interventions was obtained in order to provide character education plan using the character strengths. Fourth, actual plan of character education based on the suggestions obtained from the character strengths-based intervention studies was suggested. Finally implications and limitations of this study and the tasks and challenges for effective application at school were discussed.

본 연구는 초등학교의 생활지도와 상담 영역에서 아동의 긍정적인 발달과 성장에 초점을 둔 보다 체계적이고 실천적인 인성교육 방안을 탐구하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 첫째, 인성 및 인성교육의 개념과 기존 인성교육의 한계를 극복하기 위한 인성교육의 방향에 대하 여 살펴보았다. 둘째, 긍정심리학에서 인간의 행복에 기여하는 긍정적 성품으로 연구되어온 성격강점의 개념 및 특성이 인성교육의 개념 및 방향과 관련됨을 밝힘으로써 성격강점을 활 용하는 접근이 기존 인성교육의 한계를 극복하는 일 방안이 될 수 있음을 제안하였다. 셋째, 성격강점을 활용한 인성교육 방안을 마련하기 위하여 성격강점기반 개입의 효과를 밝힌 최 근 국내외 연구를 살펴 시사점을 도출하였다. 넷째, 인성교육의 개념 및 방향과 성격강점기 반 개입 연구에서 얻은 시사점을 토대로 성격강점을 활용한 인성교육 방안의 실제를 제시하 였다. 끝으로, 본 연구의 의의와 제한점 및 본 연구에서 제안한 방안을 학교현장에 효과적으 로 적용하기 위한 과제에 대하여 논의하였다.
