This paper presents study background, dictionary system, and the significance of compilation of pre-modern korean dictionary which is a detailed assignment for “the study on compilation of dictionaries drawing on practical use of fundamental data of Korean-Chinese Language and Literature”. The research has been performed by Institute for the Translation of Chinese Classical Literature of SunMoon University with the support of National Research Foundation of Korea. The purpose of this study is to implement an overall view of pre-modern Korean language by means of extracting headwords through integration words and grammatical elements that appears in different Hangeul literatures since the invention of Hangeul to the early twenties and presenting the use of words in various ways. Meanwhile it was difficult to find the changed aspects of each vocabulary due to the quantitative insufficiency and time disconnection in the pre-existing korean dictionary itself. The project had been conducted for about nine years from 2005 to 2014, 『Pre-Modern Korean Dictionary in Handwritten Literature』(7volumes)” was published as the intermediate output in 2010. About 150,000 of the headwords and 500,000 of examples have been extracted from 5,000 books of 650 kinds, and about 3,000 items of Korean letters, pre-modern korean documents up to now. It is expected to be published to the scale of more than 10 books in the future. 『Pre-Modern Korean Dictionary』 shows distinctive features. Firstly, it contains vocabularies targeting the literatures of different genres throughout the 15th to the 20th century which make the readers trace the diachronic changes of the individual vocabulary. Secondly, it consists of the most headwords and examples among the ancient dictionaries because even the selected headwords cover all the important words from native words to Sino- korean words, proper nouns, and borrowed words. Thirdly, it includes translated literatures in Korean and Chinese version together, and which will contribute to accurate understanding of lexical meanings by redeeming the limit of materials of korean language history available in korean only. At last, it not only expands the horizon of the study of Korean language history but it also could provide the basic materials to the related studies such as Korean literatures, Chinese literatures, folklore and so on.

본 논문은 선문대학교 중한번역문헌연구소가 한국연구재단 중점연구소지원사업에 선정되어 수행한 “ 한중어문학자료 기초 자료 활용을 통한 사전편찬 연구”의 세부과제인 ‘고어대사전 편찬’에 연구 배경과 사전의 체재 및 편찬 의의를 논한 글이다. ‘고어대사전 편찬’은 한글이 창제된 이후부터 20세기 초까지 각종 한글 문헌에 나타나는 낱말과 문법적 요소들을 통합하여 표제어를 추출하고, 그에 대한 다양한 용례를 보여줌으로써 우리말 고어의 총체적 모습을 구현하고자 하는 목적에서 출발하였다. 이 사업은 2005년부터 2014년까지 9년 동안 진행되었으 며, 2010년에는 중간 결과물로 “필사본 고어대사전(전7책)”을 간행하였다. 이후에는 『필사본 고어대사 전』 기초 위에 15∼20세기까지의 목판본, 활자본 등의 자료를 반영하여 중세국어와 근대국어와의 균 형을 맞추는데 주력하고 있다. 현재까지 한글 문헌 650여 종 5,000여 책, 한글편지 및 한글고문서 3,000 여 점의 문헌을 대상으로 하여 표제어와 용례를 추출하였으며, 표제어는 15만여 개, 용례는 50만여 개 에 달한다. 향후 약 10여 책 이상의 규모로 간행될 것으로 예상된다. 이 『고어대사전』의 특징은 15세기부터 20세기를 아우르는 다양한 장르의 문헌들에서 어휘를 선별하 였기 때문에, 개별 어휘들의 통시적인 변화 모습을 추적할 수 있다는 점, 고유어뿐만 아니라 한자어ㆍ 고제도어ㆍ고유명사ㆍ차용어까지도 총망라하였기 때문에 고어사전 가운데 가장 많은 표제어와 용례를 채록하고 있다는 점, 한문 원문과 중국어 원문이 있는 번역문헌들은 함께 싣고 있어 대부분 한글자료로 제공되었던 국어사 어휘 자료의 한계를 보완하여 더욱 정확한 어휘 의미 해석에 기여할 수 있다는 점, 국어학뿐만 아니라 국문학, 중어중문학, 민속학 등의 인접학문 연구에도 기초자료로 제공될 수 있다는 점 등이다.
