This study aims to review contemporary educational situation of unification for overseas Korean second-generations and to find the educational measures and policies to enhance their perceptions on unification. While the portion of overseas Korean students among Korean communities abroad has gradually increased, their interests and willingness to Korean unification are weaker than the first generation. Currently, moreover, the formal educational curriculum for unification is still not provided by any educational authorities, and in the schools, the educational efforts to enhance student’s interest in unification are merely involved in Korean history or culture in terms of understanding their homeland. The Korean government has no educational bodies to support unification consciousness for overseas Korean students. Under these considerations, this article seeks to measures to enhance interest and consciousness of Korean future generation toward Korean unification from two aspects. First, in the education curriculum aspect as a pan governmental effort, it is needed to set up the basic guidelines for unification education and develop convergent educational model that integrated by exist moral and history subject, student-led field experience study, homeland–connected programs, and emotional and cultural approaches such as festival. Second, from the institutional and policy point, training system for teachers who are in charge of unification education, official survey for evaluating unification consciousness of Korean students abroad through developing systemic index for measuring their consciousness on unification of homeland, and governance for unification education in which related ministries and civil groups participate.

이 연구는 재외동포 차세대들의 통일의식 실태를 진단하고 이를 토대로 통일의식을 높일 수 있는 교육적, 정책적 방안들을 모색한다. 재외동포 사회에서 점차 비중이 증가하는 차세대들의 통일에 대한 관심과 실천의지는 1세대들에 비해 취약한 실정이다. 학교에서 본격적인 통일교육을 위한 교육과정이 마련되어 있지 않고 한국어나 한국역사 교육 속에 통일은 지극히 피상적으로 취급되고 있다. 한국 정부로서는 통일의식 실태를 파악하여 교육 지원을 담당할 전담기구가 없는 등 제도적으로 취약한 실정이다. 이 글은 재외동포 차세대들의 통일의식 제고를 위한 방안을 두 가지 측면에서 모색하였다. 우선, 교육과정 측면에서 범정부 차원의 통일교육 기본지침 마련, 도덕, 역사 등 기존의 교육과정과 융합한 통일교육, 학생 주도형 현장체험학습과 맞춤식 통일교육, 모국연계 통일교육, 그리고 축제 등 감성적 문화적 접근을 통한 통일교육 등을 제시했다. 제도적, 정책적 지원방안으로는 담당교원들에 대한 통일교육 연수 지원, 차세대 통일의식 지표개발을 통한 범정부적 차원의 통일의식 실태조사, 그리고 다양한 정부부처와 민간 부분들이 참여하는 통일교육 거버넌스 구축을 제시했다.
