As the ever-intensifying terrors, internal wars, ethnic conflicts and ethnic cleansings demonstrate, the reality of globalization is increasingly overwhelmed by more extremized and routinized violence than ever before. In addition to this, in qualitative level violence in twenty-first century has undergone a dramatic change and consequently, it is argued that it is necessary to change the paradigm of its perception and to innovate the way of responding to it. We can find the essence of this change in the mobius strip where ‘the violence of globalization’ is combined with ‘the globalization of violence’ through the global communicative networks. More fundamentally, this is originated by the paradox built in the globalization itself, which is related to the representative modern boundaries such as nation-state, nation, ethnicity, etc. In this problematics, making the concept ‘boundary’ a general keyword, this article aims to examine the new paradigm of violence in the twenty-first century with special reference to the theories of violence of E. Balibar and M. Wieviorka, to investigate the ideas on the violence and nonviolence of J. Derrida and G. Agamben, finally to synthesize all the discussions by the anti-violence (civilite) theory of E. Balibar.

현재 날로 빈발하는 테러와 종족분쟁, 내전, 인종청소가 보여주듯이 21세기 지구화의 현실은 갈수록 극단화되는 한편 일상화되는 폭력의 자장에서 여전히 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 한편 질적인 차원에서 21세기의 폭력은 패러다임의 교체, 인식 및 대응방법의 혁신의 필요성이 운위될 정도로 큰 변화를 보인다. 그 본질은 무엇보다 ‘지구화의 폭력’이, 지구화 자체를 가능하게 한 글로벌 소통 네트워크를 통한 ‘폭력의 지구화’와 맞물리는 뫼비우스적 연쇄 속에서 찾을 수 있다. 보다 근본적으로 이는 민족, 국민국가, 인종 등 대표적인 근대적 ‘경계’와 관련해 지구화 자체에 내장된 패러독스로부터 기원하며, 지구화 시대 폭력에 대한 대표적 이론가들이 겨냥하는 지점 역시 여기다. 이러한 문제의식에서 이 글은 ‘경계’를 전체 키워드로 삼아, 발리바르와 비비오르카의 폭력론을 중심으로 21세기 폭력의 새로운 패러다임을 고찰하고, 데리다와 아감벤의 비(非)/폭력론을 상세히 살펴본 후, 발리바르의 반(反)폭력론을 통해 이를 종합하는 것을 내용으로 한다.
