In the early 1980s, 3D printing technology was developed but the usage was limited to certain industries due to production cost and expensive equipment. Nevertheless, it is adopted by diverse industries with the recent development of related technology, expiration of the patent and price reduction of digital devices. Indeed, an introduction of inexpensive 3D printer for personal use opened a commercialization of the 3D printing. On this, 3D printing is being introduced in fashion industry along with various industrial fields, yet there is much to be desired in an academic study on 3D printing. For this reason, this study aimed to research the concept of 3D printing and its current status, to examine currently used 3D printing method. Then, this study classified the examples of fashion design that used 3D printing according to production methods, and drew its formative and functional characteristics. The analysis results showed that most of the fashion designs using 3D printing technology were printed with the use of FDM and SLS methods. Therefore, this study produced fashion accessories and clothing with a effective design concept for suggesting result, using FDM method. Findings of this study suggested a possibility of new expression in fashion design by producing texture as sophisticated and rich as real fabric material with the use of 3D printing even 3D printing fashion product was announced as 1 unit. Such fashion product creation by 3D printing is expected to become a new way of displaying fashion design along with advancing technology from day to day.

1980년대 초 개발된 3D 프린팅은 생산비용과 고가의 장비로 인하여 제한된 산업분야에만 쓰였으나 최근 관련기술의 발달, 특허만료, 디지털 기기의 가격하락으로 다양한 산업분야에 적용되고 있다. 또한 저렴한 가정용 3D 프린터의 등장으로 3D 프린팅은 본격적인 대중화를 맞이하고 있다. 이에 3D 프린팅이 다양한 산업분야 뿐만 아니라 패션산업에도 빠르게 도입되고 있지만 그에 대한 학문적 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 먼저 3D 프린팅의 개념과 현황 및 3D 프린팅의 출력방식에 대해 조사하였으며 패션디자인 사례를 제작 방식에 따라 분류하여 그 조형적, 기능적 특성을 도출하였다. 그 결과 현재 3D 프린팅 기술을 활용한 패션디자인 사례는 대부분 FDM, SLS 두 가지 방식이 대표적으로 쓰이고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 FDM 방식을 활용하여 결과물을 가장 효과적으로 보여줄 수 있는 디자인 모티브에 따라 패션 액세서리와 의상을 제작하였다. 본 연구의 결과물은 현재3D 프린팅을 활용하고 있는 패션 분야의 제작 방식이 한 개의 유닛 형태만 생산함으로써 패션 단품의 역할만 하고 있는 상황에 3D 프린팅을 이용하여 직물을 직조하였다는 데에 가장 큰 의의가 있다. 이는 3D 프린팅을 이용하여 직물을 제작함으로써 의복의 직물 소재와 같은 고급스러움과 풍부한 텍스처가 가능하도록 하여 패션디자인에 새로운 표현의 가능성을 제안하였으며 이러한 3D 프린팅을 활용한 패션작품 제작은 나날이 발전하는 기술과 융합하여 새로운 패션디자인 표현 방식이 될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
