This research aims at searching for the academic ground to deduct Barthes' mythological accessibility in traditional architectural colors from semiotics, and through which, interpreting the meanings of five colors of traditional architecture in a semiological way. In other words, the denotative and connotative meanings of colors expressed in the five colors of Bulguksa Temple architecture were investigated into with the five colors respectively, and each color legend in them was studied. As the analysis results, the background and ideology of the foundation of Bulguksa Temple were expressed in the colors of traditional architecture, worked sometimes as physical and sometimes as mental symbols, and became legend flexibly. The focus on Barthes' narrative structure made it possible to infer the state of a period through the signs of colors. It has been found out that Barthes' mythologies participates both in this form of aesthetic symbols and in history-scientific ideology.

본 연구는 전통건축색채에 나타난 바르트의 신화론적 접근 가능성을 도출하기 위한 학문적 근거를 기호학에서 찾고, 이를 통하여 전통건축색채에 나타난 오방색의 의미를 기호학적으로 해석하고자 한다. 즉 불국사 건축의 오방색에서 나타나는 외시적이고 함축적인 색의 의미를 다섯 가지 색상별로 나누어 고찰 한 후 이에 나타난 각각의 색채신화를 탐구한다. 분석결과 불국사가 건립된 배경과 사상은 전통건축 색채에도 드러났으며, 때로는 물질적이고 때로는 정신적인 기호로 작용하여 유연하게 신화화되었음을 알 수 있었다. 색의 기호를 통해 그 당시의 시대상황을 유추할 수 있는 것은 바르트가 말하는 이야기체의 구조에 집중해서 파악했기 때문이다. 바르트의 신화론은 이러한 형태의 미학적 기호에도 참여함과 동시에 역사과학적인 관념학에도 참여한다는 것을 알 수 있다.
