This study focused on acceptability to foreign readers of Korean novel asplan of globalization of Korean novel. By far, studies of globalization ofKorean novel emphasized on creative work which combines universal topicwith unique characteristics of Korean in contents aspect, close translation inform aspect. However the meaning of text accepted by reader’s socioculturalcontext and their interest. Therefore, writers and works should be selected byindividual local reading preference prior to introduce to readers. In this study, I analyzed each culture area’s bestsellers to figure thereading preference of foreign readers against these problems. As a result;England and American prefer the work with universal theme yet in mysterystory structure, France does with the theme of double face of human ortrauma and its recovery, Germany does with round characters which leavemore to the imagination of readers. Also China preferred the work whichdescried solitude, success and love, Japan does the work with touching andinstructive story which heals mind. In this study, after the analysis of reading preference of each culture area, Imade up the list of acceptable works to each culture area among the workswhich are in translation by support of Literature Translate Institute ofKorea. At this time of Korean wave spreads out with popular culture, it isencouraging work that making list of acceptable works to each culture areaand support and promote them intensively.

본 연구는 한국 소설의 세계화를 위한 방안으로, 한국 소설의 해외 독자에의 수용 가능성을 가장 중점에 두었다. 한국 소설의 세계화 방안에 대한연구는 그동안 내용적으로는 보편적인 주제와 한국적인 특수성을 결합시킨 작품 창작의 중요성을, 형식적으로는 원작을 충실히 반영하는 번역의중요성을 강조해왔다. 그러나 텍스트의 의미는 그것을 읽는 독자의 사회문화적 맥락과 관심사에 의해 다르게 수용된다. 따라서 개별 지역의 독서취향에 맞는 작가와 작품을 선별해서 소개해야 한다. 본고에서는 이러한 문제제기에 대한 대응으로 각 문화권의 베스트셀러를 분석해서 해외 독자들의 독서 경향을 알아보았다. 그 결과 영미권에서 는 보편적인 주제를 다루면서 추리소설적 구조를 갖는 작품을, 프랑스에서는 인간의 양면성을 다루었거나 트라우마와 회복의 구조로 이루어지는작품을, 독일에서는 입체적 인물이 등장하며 독자가 상상할 여지가 큰 작품을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 중국에서는 고독과 성공 그리고 사랑과 관련된 작품을, 일본에서는 마음을 위로할 수 있는 감동과 교훈이 담긴 작품을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 본고에서는 이처럼 개별 문화권의 독서 경향을 분석한 후, 현재 한국문학번역원에서 번역이 지원되고 있는 작품 중 각 문화권에 수용이 가능할것 같은 작품의 목록을 정리해서 제시했다. 대중문화를 중심으로 한류가확장되고 있는 이 시기에, 이처럼 개별 문화권의 상황을 분석해서 수용될만한 작품들을 집중적으로 지원하고 홍보하는 일이 바람직하다.
