The purpose of this paper is to examine how traces of the novel poetics of love romance are found in modern novels by applying the analytical method of the novel poetics of love romance, focusing on the commonality of the meaning of love between classical novels and modern novels. The most distinctive feature of main character in the novel poetics of love romance is a feeling of loneliness. It is said that a love between two persons is to meet with ji-gi(知己) in that an isolated person who is discordant with society meets someone who understands him (or her) to fall in love. The meeting of 'I' who experienced family dissolution with Sunhye who went through a death of husband resembles that of the novel poetics of love romance in that the meeting is between two lonely beings. In the novel poetics of love romance, poem and letter play a role of a medium of love and feeling that cannot be expressed with conversation. In , 'Enya' and telephone messages play the same role. The space that main characters in the novel poetics of love romance meet is realization of desire; in other words, a fantasy that the desire for new order creates and does not exist in reality. If the reality expressed by kyuk-po in is fear and impossibility, Eunbiryoung is fantasy because it is a space that makes different type of exploration from that in reality possible. In addition, this fantasy combines with snow. Time in Eunbiryoung plays a role of connecting the memories of the past and the current life and makes the situation of two persons recognized as fantastic and tragic one. Love in the novel poetics of love romance presents writer consciousness by showing a dilemma of reality through a death or farewell. In , there is a recognition by characters that life, desire, and relationship of human being is as finite as personal time. This recognition releases all of these human emotions into extensive time and space and makes their relationship not connected nor disconnected. Tragic end in also shows the reflection of and view on human being as if that of the novel poetics of love romance is a motivation of reflection on human being. The novel poetics of love romance ceased to exist with exhaustion of its genre nature before 20th century. However, the universal characteristics of the novel poetics of love romance continue until now through modern novels such as , which presents the value of real world and the meaning of human life through tragic love and unrealistic experience in eccentric space of a lonely person. the novel poetics of love romance interpret and unravel the meaning of human being through love using the discourse of the Middle Ages, and its modern feature is shown in .

본 논문은 고전 소설과 현대 소설에 나타나는 사랑 혹은 애정의 의미가 갖는 공통점에 주목하여 애정 전기소 설 분석 방법을 현대 소설 <은비령>에 적용함으로써 애정 전기 소설의 흔적이 현대 소설에 존재하는 모습을 살펴보는 것에 목적을 둔다. <은비령>에 나타나는 애정 전기소설의 흔적을 탐색하는 본고의 연구 방법은 작 가가 의도하지 않은 상황에서도 현대소설에 고전 소설의 흔적이 나타날 수 있음을 드러내보이고자 한다. 애정 전기 소설의 주인공이 가지는 가장 특징은 고독감이다. 사회와 불화한 고독한 인물이 자신을 알아주는 사람을 만나 사랑에 빠진다는 면에서 두 사람의 사랑은 知己와의 만남이라고 한다. <은비령>에서 ‘나’의 가족 해체 경험은 현대인으로서의 자기 정체성의 문제와 관련된다고 볼 때 ‘나’는 애정 전기소설의 고독한 인물이 라는 특징을 가지고 있는 것이다. 또 다른 고독한 존재로서 선혜와의 만남은 고독한 존재의 만남이라는 측면 에서 애정 전기소설의 주인공들과 닮아 있다. 애정 전기 소설에서는 대화를 통해 표현하기 어려운 사랑과 감 정상태를 표현하는 매개체로 詩와 편지가 등장한다. 주인공들이 이러한 매개체를 통해 깊은 정신적 교감과 유 대감을 드러낸다는 측면에서 중요하다. <은비령>에서 이러한 역할은 ‘엔야’와 전화메세지가 하고 있다. 애정 전기소설의 주인공들이 만나는 공간은 현실에는 없는 새로운 질서를 창조하고자 하는 욕구가 만들어 낸 환상으로서 욕망의 구현체이다. 때문에 은비령은 현실과는 다른 성격을 가진 환상 공간으로 설정되어 있다. 은비령의 환상성은 눈과 결합되어 나타난다. 현실에서 쉽게 접하기 어려운 같은 환상적인 풍경들과 함께 인적 없는 길에 대한 서술은 은비령이 가진 비현실성을 나타내는 표지라고 할 수 있다. 공간적 서술 표지 뿐 아니라 시간적 서술 표지 역시 은비령이 특수한 공간임을 말해준다. 은비령은 과거와 현재 그리고 미래가 공존하는 공간이 되고 있다. 은비령의 시간성은 시간의 주름들이 과거의 기억과 현재의 삶을 하나의 줄기로 이어주는 역할을 하며 두 사람의 정황을 환상적이면서도 비극적으로 인식하게 한다. 애정 전기소설은 인물의 사랑이 죽음이나 이별 등 비극적인 결말을 통해 현실의 질곡을 보여줌으로써 작가의 식을 드러낸다. <은비령>에서는 인간의 시간이 유한한 만큼 인간의 삶과 욕망, 인연 모두 유한한다는 것을 깨 닫고 있다. 이러한 깨달음은 광대한 공간과 시간 속으로 인간의 그것들을 흘려보내면서 그들의 사랑을 결연도 절연도 아닌 상황으로 만들었다. 전기소설에서의 비극적 결말은 인간 존재에 대한 반성적 인식의 계기가 되는 것처럼 <은비령>에서의 비극적 결말 역시 작가가 가진 인간 존재에 대한 성찰과 세계관을 보여주는 것이다. 애정 전기소설은 20세기 이전에 이미 그 장르적 특질을 소진하고 소멸하였다. 하지만 고독한 인물의 비극적 사랑과 기이한 공간에서의 비현실적 체험을 통해 현실적 삶의 가치와 인간 삶의 의미를 드러내는 <은비령>으 로 현재까지 이어지는 애정 전기 소설이 가진 보편성을 찾아 볼 수 있다.
