This study aims to examine the character and narrative function of banquet culture, including drinking and writing poetry, in Choonh- yang-Jeon and Ok-Ru-Mong. In Choonhyang-Jeon, Byeonhakdo’s giving himself up to entertainment symbolizes his misgovernment. At the same time, the banquet expresses Yimongyong’s awareness of reality, and also arranges a space that reflects people’s desires. In Ok-Ru-Mong, the banquet acts as an opportunity to demonstrate the wit and beauty of heroes and heroines, and simultaneously connects two characters. It becomes the reason for the hero and heroine’s conflict with Hwangyeook, and that Kangnamhong becomes the female hero after overcoming her trials. In both Korean and Chinese works, the banquets of old novels commonly allow their guests to enjoy entertainment and express a taste for the arts. However, the banquet is not just a background. It has the role of directly revealing the theme of the novel and amplifying the characters’ conflicts. It also has the function of inducing narrative development by triggering a new event.

이 글은 <춘향전>과 <옥루몽>에 나타나는 詩酒宴會 문화의 성격과 서사적 기능을 살펴보는 데 목적을 둔 글이다. <춘향전>의 경우에는 변학도의 유흥을 드러내면서 그의 失政을 상징적으로 드러낸다는 점이 확인된다. 그리고 다른 한편으로는 이몽룡의 현실인식을 드러내면서 동시에 민중들의 욕망이 투영될 수 있는 장을 마련하는 역할을 하고 있다. 이와 달리 <옥루몽>의 경우에는 시주연회가 남녀 주인공의 才子佳人적 성격을 드러내면서 동시에 두 남녀가 결연하게 되는 계기로 작용한다. 그리고 남녀 주인공이 황여옥과 같은 인물과 갈등관계를 형성하는 원인이 되기도 한다. 동시에 여주인공 강남홍이 시련을 겪고 이어서 여성영웅으로 변모될 수 있는 기제가 되는 것이 시주연회이기도 하다. 이상을 통해서 볼 때, 고소설 속 시주연회는 한국 배경 작품이나 중국 배경 작품이나 간에 공통적으로 유흥이나 풍류의 형식을 취하기는 한다. 하지만 그것이 단순한 삽화로 그치지는 않고, 시주연회가 직접적으로 주제의식을 드러내기도 하고, 인물의 갈등을 증폭시키거나, 새로운 사건을 유발하여 서사의 전환을 유도하는 기능을 한다는 점을 알 수 있다.
