The aim of this study is to examine the anti-aesthetics in fashion focused on Dutch fashion designer Bas Kosters, whose fashion activities is getting an attention as a young contemporary anti-fashion designer. The research covers theoretical study to understand and analogize the key characteristics of the anti-aesthetics such as resistance, expandability, participation, and introspection. For the case study, Bas Kosters’ works were analyzed through his own web-site, collection reviews, public interviews, newspaper articles, and exhibition reviews after 2000 and fashion collections from 2010 to 2014 AW collection. As a result of the study, the anti-aesthetic features derived from Kosters’ fashion activities were classified into five categories: the avant-garde of anti-fashion, expression of anti-formalism, territorial expandability, social symbolism, intrinsic nature of aesthetic experience. The concept of anti-aesthetics in fashion refuses fashion trends and old stereotyped fashion system regarding clothing as a communicative medium and the anti-fashion in formal aspects denies the conventional ideal beauty and breaks away from the normative formality. Exploring an organic relationship between the society and human beings, anti-fashion allows to across over various genres to open up a wider creativity and provides participatory aesthetic experience to both designers and audiences. Ultimately, anti-fashion is a manifestation of aesthetic cogitating on fashion by its characteristics of negation and resistance and it is a new way of life due to practical implication for discovering possibilities of living and changing our society.

본 연구는 반미학적 패션을 추구하는 네덜란드 디자이너 바스 코스테르스의 전반적인 작품 활동을 연구 대상으로 하여 패션 영역에 나타나는 반미학적 특성을 분석하고 내적 의미를 밝히는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 문헌연구를 통한 이론적 고찰을 수행하여 반미학의 핵심 요소를 파악하였고, 이어 패션에서의 반미학 논의를 살펴본 후 코스테르스의 작품 세계를 분석하였다. 사례 분석은 코스테르스의 웹사이트와 인터뷰 기사 자료, 관련된 신문과 잡지 기사 및 전시 자료 등을 참고하였으며 연구 범위는 2000년 이후 패션과 관련된 여러 작업들과 2010년부터 2014년 AW 패션 컬렉션을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 연구의 결과, 반미학의 핵심은 저항성, 확장성, 참여성, 그리고 성찰성으로 파악되었으며 코스테르스의 작품에 나타난 반미학적 특성은 반패션의 전위성, 반형식적 조형성, 영역의 확장성, 사회적 상징성, 그리고 미적 경험의 내재성의 다섯 범주로 분류되었다. 반미학적 패션의 개념은 유행과 패션 체계에 의한 패션을 거부하고 전통적인 가치를 부정하는 반(反)패션으로 커뮤니케이션의 매개로서 옷을 보는 입장이며, 반미학적 패션의 형식은 미적 이상을 부인하고 규범적 형식화로부터의 이탈로 나타났다. 또한 반미학적 패션은 인간과 사회의 유기적 관계에 대한 탐색이라는 주제 하에 다양한 장르와 결합된 확장된 영역에서 표현되는데 이는 관객의 이해와 참여를 유도하는 경험적인 미적 가치를 제공하는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 반패션은 기존의 것에 대한 부정과 비판을 통해 새로운 삶의 가능성을 발견하고 사회를 변화시키려는 실천적 함의를 내포하는 까닭에 삶으로서의 패션을 사유하는 미의식의 발현이라고 할 수 있다.
