The aim of this study is to assess the wars carried out by Napoleon from the 4-level strategy suggested by Michael Howard. Firstly, Napoleon achieved numerical superiority at the definitive time and place by means of mobility principle and concentration principle, and verified the important of strategy in terms of tactic level such as blocking of the line of communication of the enemy and tracking. Secondly, it is assessed that Napoleon was negligent in munitions strategy. While he input large-scale troops in the war field and used‘local procurement and supply system’, he was defeated by the munitions strategy of the Russian troops during his expedition to Russia. Thirdly, as for technical strategy, as the level of weapons in those times was similar, it did not play a definitive role in the victory or defeat of the war. Napoleon could exert the performance of weapons system to the full extent by his outstanding manipulation of troops and training. Fourthly, social level strategy became a cause of victory or defeat of war. The revolutionary spirit of the French Revolution became the foundation of the victory of most wars by Napoleon. But, due to the resistant spirit of Spanish people, France failed in the Spanish expedition. In conclusion, today’s military strategy must consider tactic level and social, munitions and technical strategies.

본 논문의 목적은 나폴레옹이 수행한 전쟁을 마이클 하워드(Michael Howard)가 제 시한 4가지 차원에서 전략을 기준으로 평가하는 것이다. 첫째, 나폴레옹은 기동의 원칙과 집중의 원칙 등 전쟁원칙을 시의 적절하게 구사하 면서 결정적 시간과 장소에 상대적 우위를 달성하였고, 적 병참선 차단 및 추격 등 용 병적 차원에서 전략의 중요성을 입증시켰다. 둘째, 나폴레옹은 군수적 차원의 전략을 소홀히 한 것으로 평가된다. 그는 대규모 부 대를 전장에 투입하면서 현지조달 보급제도를 활용했지만 결국 러시아 원정에서 러시 아의 군수적 차원의 전략에 의해 패배하였다. 셋째, 기술적 차원의 전략으로 당시의 무기의 수준은 대등한 수준이었기 때문에 전 쟁의 승패를 가름하는 요인으로 작용하지는 않았다. 나폴레옹은 탁월한 용병술과 훈련 으로 무기체계의 성능을 최대한 발휘할 수 있었다. 넷째, 사회적 차원의 전략은 전쟁의 승리 또는 실패의 원인으로 작용하였다. 프랑스 대혁명의 혁명정신은 나폴레옹이 대부분의 전쟁에서 승리를 차지하게 된 밑거름이 되 었다. 그러나 스페인 국민들의 저항의식으로 프랑스는 스페인 원정을 실패하였다. 결국 오늘날 군사전략은 용병적 차원이 중요한 위치를 점유한 가운데, 국가전략 차 원에서 사회적􀁸군수적􀁸기술적 차원의 전략을 모두 고려해야 할 것이다.
