This study begins with an inquiry into how relatively well-known and socially conscious European artists, such as Brueghel, Goya, David, and Kollwitz, and their works of art are used in public school art classes to instruct students on comprehensive domains like art criticism and aesthetics. Rather than a formal analysis of artworks, this study focuses on their historical backgrounds and contextual information, allowing students to attain a deeper understanding of their meaning, content, topics, and methods, as well as the artists’ visions and intentions (Shahn, 1957). This approach facilitates articulation and discussion regarding how these classic works still affect us in a contemporary world. Moreover, this paper emphasizes key conceptual frameworks such as enduring ideas, learning with visual arts, and learning through visual arts as ways educators can implement these socially conscious artists and their works of art within contemporary art classroom instruction.

이 논문은 유럽의 미술작품들 중에서 사회의식적 작품들(socially conscious works of art)을 어떻게 미학이나 미술비평과 같은 이해영역의 학교미술수업에 활용할 수 있을 것인가에 대한 탐구에서 시작 하였다. 본 연구에서는 이들 미술작품들의 형식적인 분석(formal analysis)보다는 작품들이 연관되어 있는 역사적인 사건과 창작 당시의 시대적 배경의 이해와 분석 즉 맥락적인 영역의 이해에 초점을 맞추었다. 왜냐하면 작품에 대한 맥락적인 영역의 이해와 분석을 통해서 우리는 미술작품의 의미, 내 용, 주제, 제작방법, 작가의 생각과 의도를 보다 심도있게 이해할 수 있기 때문이다(Shahn, 1957). 이 논문에서는 일반대중들에게도 비교적 잘 알려진 브뤼겔, 고야, 다비드, 콜비츠의 생애와 그들이 제작 한 사회의식적 미술작품들을 고찰해 봄으로서 이들 작품들이 현재를 살고 있는 우리들에게 던지는 삶과 관련된 주제에 대해서 생각해 보았다. 마지막으로 이 논문을 통해서 미술교육자들은 이 논문의 개념의 틀(conceptual frameworks)인 지속가능한 아이디어(enduring ideas), 시각미술을 이용한 학습 (learning with visual arts), 시각미술을 통한 학습(learning through visual arts)의 이해를 통해 16세 기와 20세기 초 유럽에서 제작된 사회의식적 미술작품들과 작가들이 어떻게 현대의 미술교육 수업에 접목되어 있는지 알 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 시각미술수업이 어떻게 다른 교과와 학생들의 현재 삶과도 연결될 수 있는지 생각해 볼 수 있을 것이다.
