The purpose of this study is to suggest the necessity and the direction of social service education in the practice of church education. If the church exists in order to continue the work of Jesus in this world, social service is one of the essential vocations of the church which is called to build the kingdom of God on earth. In this respect, social service education should also be considered as one of the central educational themes in church education. However, the social service education has been relatively neglected in the church education as a channel inviting faith communities into practical life of social services. This study reviews the understanding of social service in biblical context and discusses the necessity of Christian social service education in the church. As the norm of life, the community of Israel attempted to achieve ‘Shalom’ by giving the socially disadvantaged hospitality. Jesus showed his vision of God’s kingdom in the ministry of serving others. The early church also cared for socially disadvantaged people through voluntary contributions and sharing as a natural form of expressing their faith. Nurturing a person into a mature is one of the central tasks of church education, and mature faith should pursue the holistic way of practicing Christian life including social service. When it comes to the phase of the Korean church in the today’s society, the educational mission of teaching and practicing social service has more importance. The researcher explores the characteristics of the church as a community of service from four different perspectives such as 1) shalom community, 2) Jesus’s kingdom community, 3) early churchlike diakonia community, 4) spiritual maturity-oriented community. Next, within the framework of life-saving education, four areas of educational contents are proposes such as 1) loving neighbor education, 2) peace education, 3) ecological preservation education, 4) right culture formation education. Three alternatives for the professional practice of social service education in church education that are suggested are 1) developing proper learning curriculum, 2) utilizing church group activities and church rituals as a means of social service education, 3) organizing specialized social service agencies and nurturing professional leadership.

본 연구는 교회사회봉사의 당위성을 고찰해보면서 이러한 교회의 사역이 체계적이며 지속적으로 수행되어지기 위해서는 먼저 신앙공동체의 사회봉사에 대한 올바른 인식이 선행되어야 한다고 보고, 사회봉사교육의 필요성과 근거 및 당면한 실천과제는 무엇인지를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 교회의 존재이유가 예수 그리스도께서 하신 일을 지속하기 위함이라는 관점에서 본다면, 사회봉사는 이 땅에 하나님의 나라를 건설하도록 부름 받은 교회의 본질적 사명중의 하나이다. 이러한 맥락에서 교회의 신앙교육 역시 이 세상 속에서 하나님의 뜻을 이루고 하나님의 나라를 확장하는 사명을 담당하도록 하는 교육이 되어야 한다. 따라서 교회의 신앙교육은 그 내용에 있어서 사회봉사를 중심주제의 하나로 삼아 신앙공동체를 봉사의 실천적 삶으로 초대하는 통로역할을 다하여야 함에도 불구하고 그동안 다른 영역에 비하여 상대적으로 소홀히 다루어 온 면이 있다.
성서는 교회와 사회가 하나님의 한 창조세계를 이룬다는 것을 전제한다. 그리고 이 세상에서 하나님의 통치가 구현되는 사회운동, 전인적인 구원을 지향하는 하나님 나라 운동으로서 사회봉사의 필연성을 보여주고 있다. 교회의 신앙교육이 지향해야 할 목표점으로서의 중심과제는 ‘성숙한 신앙을 갖도록 하는 것’이다. 성숙한 신앙은 통전적 신앙을 추구해야한다는 관점에서, 신앙교육은 모든 신앙공동체에게 사회봉사적 삶을 의식하고 실천하는 성숙한 그리스도인의 삶을 살 수 있도록 초대하는 교육적 사명을 소홀히 하지 말아야 한다. 오늘의 한국사회에서 교회의 위상을 생각할 때, 교회의 신앙교육은 공동체의 구성원들로 하여금 사회봉사의 가치관과 삶을 익히고 실천하도록 교육하는 사명이 얼마나 중대한지 다시 한 번 고민하고 해결방안을 모색해야 한다. 이러한 문제의식 가운데, 본 연구는 교회가 지역사회를 향한 봉사를 보다 체계화시키고 지속적으로 활성화시키기 위한 토대로서, 먼저 교회 내에서의 교육적 실천노력이 중요함을 밝히고 그 가능성을 논의 해보고자 하였다. 연구자는 먼저 봉사공동체로서의 교회적 특성을 1) 샬롬 공동체, 2) 예수의 하나님나라운동 공동체, 3) 디아코니아 초대교회 공동체, 4) 영적성숙지향 교회공동체라는 네 가지 측면에서 살펴보면서 교회 사회봉사의 당위성을 논의하였다. 다음으로, 교회의 사회봉사교육을 위한 교육내용 구성에 있어서는 생명 살리는 교육이라는 큰 틀 안에서 1) 이웃사랑 교육, 2) 평화교육, 3) 창조보전 교육, 4) 바른 문화 형성교육이라는 네 영역으로 분류하여 보았다. 또한 교회의 사회봉사교육과 관련하여 향후 해결되어야 할 실천과제로 1) 사회봉사교육 학습교재 및 커리큘럼 개발, 2) 교회기초조직 및 종교적 활동과 연계된 사회봉사교육 강화, 3) 사회봉사교육 전담부서의 활성화 및 전문 지도력의 양성화의 문제를 논의하였다.
