This paper discusses the necessity of the ministry of spiritual direction in the diversified society and reviews its development from the historical perspective and contemporary application. Although contemporary man/woman enjoys material affluence, he/she is more anxious for things eternal and profound relationship. He/She wants to pursue inner world and experience God who is the ultimate existence breaking from superficial encounter and from the institutionalized church. It appears that spiritual direction satisfies this demand of contemporary ages. Since the prophets of Old Testament started the spiritual direction, Jesus and his apostles took over and continued this tradition. Since then spiritual direction was active mainly in the monastic movement, then it was sustained in diverse tradition since Reformation era. However, contemporary church loses this precious heritage which is the now the prime area of pastor's duties. It is encouraging that spiritual direction is an emerging issue in order to fulfill the need of contemporary man/woman in 21st century. While we explore the historical development of spiritual direction in this paper, we compare Catholic tradition with Reformed tradition of spiritual direction. Then, we draw a conclusion how to apply this lesson to contemporary church.

본 논문은 다원화된 사회 속에서 왜 영적지도가 필요한지 언급하며, 영적지도 사역을 그리스도교 전통의 역사적인 맥락에서 살펴보고, 그 현대적 적용을 다루고 있다. 현대인들은 물질적인 풍요 속에서 살아가고 있지만 오히려 영원에 대한 갈망과 영혼의 친구를 찾는 갈급함은 더 절박해 졌다. 그들은 또한 피상적인 만남과 제도화된 교회에서 탈피하여 내면 세계에 대한 관심과 궁극적 실체이신 하나님을 깊이 체험하고 싶다는 갈망으로 나타나게 되었는데 이러한 시대적 요청에 부응하기 위해 등장한 것이 바로 영적지도이다. 영적지도는 구약의 예언자들로부터 시작해서 예수님 과 사도들에 이르기까지 지속 되었다. 그 후 수도원 운동의 발생과 더불어 주로 수도원 내에서 활발하게 진행되다가 종교개혁 이후 다양한 형태로 그 명맥을 이어 오다가 현대에 와서 잃어버린 소중한 유산이다. 영적지도는 성도들을 목양 하는 목회자의 본질적인 직무인 동시에 핵심이다. 잃어버린 유산인 영적지도가 21세기에 부상하여 현대인들의 필요에 부응하려는 현상은 매우 고무적이라고 할 수 있다. 역사적인 고찰과 더불어 본 논문에서 가톨릭교회에서의 영적 지도와 개혁교회에서의 영적지도를 비교해서 살펴보았으며, 이를 통해서 현대교회가 어떻게 적용해야 할지를 제안하였다.
