In addition to its effect of market opening, the economic integration affects research and development of firms, thereby affecting economic growth in the long run. This paper examines the effect of economic integration on research and development based on the model of contest with externality. Firms in both integrating countries engage in research and development after integration only when R&D efficiency of firms in one country is similar to that of the firms in the other country. Economic integration can either increase or decrease the number of firms participating in R&D contest, depending on the extent of externality. However, total investment on R&D is shown to increase after economic integration. Increased trade and R&D investment both have positive effects on the economic growth in the long run.

경제통합은 통합 이전에 각국에서 독자적으로 이루어지던 연구개발(R&D)경합을 통합시킨다. 이는 연 구개발경합에 참여하는 기업의 수와 연구개발투자액에 영향을 미치며 장기적인 성장경로에도 영향을 미치게 된다. 본 논문은 경합모형(Contest model)을 이용하여 경제통합이 연구개발투자에 미치는 영향 을 분석하며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 경제통합 대상국간에 연구개발투자 효율성의 차이가 크면 통합이 후 효율성이 뛰어난 국가에서만 연구개발투자가 이루어진다. 경제통합 대상국들의 연구개발투자 효율성 이 비슷한 경우에는 통합이후 양국에서 연구개발투자가 이루어진다. 경제통합 이후 연구개발경합에 참 여하는 기업의 수는 경제통합의 외부성이 작으면 감소하고 외부성이 충분히 크면 증가한다. 연구개발투 자액은 통합 이후 항상 증가한다. 이러한 투자증가는 경제통합에 따른 무역의 증가와 결합하여 경제성 장을 촉진한다.
