This study examines the symbolic meaning of folk painting from analytic psychological point of view and researches on the search for art therapeutic value, and aims to see if the symbolic meaning of folk painting is still meaningful today's art therapeutic sector. The method of study is focused on the domestic and foreign specialized books and relevant theses and the scope of study is focused on the folk paintings of the Joseon Dynasty period when the folk painting was popular among people and of which the data is abundant. Folk painting which is called as the painting of ordinary person among the paintings of Joseon Dynasty period is a representative painting that symbolizes universal and primal desires pursued by human. The folk painting deals with all life objects including legends and tale which are contents of imagination as well as reality. The folk painting comforted and pleased the people's lives by expressing root desires of human for longevity, wealth, fecundity of men, and sexual love with symbols with the meanings contained in the folk paintings. Also, the various materials appeared in the folk painting are universal spirits and symbols shared by human, and they help us discover unified self by understanding the original form, the contents of collective unconsciousness. The symbols of folk painting embody the original form of collective unconsciousness, and as the contents are charged with universality, they have the power to boost the emotion that hides in the human psychology. Therefore, such symbols reflect universal emotion for happy life of Korean people and it means that they have artistic art therapeutic value.

본 연구는 분석심리학의 관점에서 민화의 상징적 의미를 알아보고 예술치료적 가치 탐색을 연구한 논문으로 민화가 가지는 상징의미가 오늘날 예술치료현장에서 가치가 있는지 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구의 방법은 국내외에 전문서적과 관련 논문을 중심으로 하였으며 연구의 범위는 민화가 민중 사이에 성행하고 자료가 풍부한 조선시대의 민화를 중심으로 하였다. 조선시대 회화 중 일반 서민의 그림이라 불리는 민화는 인간이 추구하는 보편적, 근원적인 욕구가 상징화되어 있는 대표적인 회화이다. 민화는 생활 주변의 모든 대상들, 즉 현실 뿐 만 아니라 상상의 내용, 전설과 설화 등 다양한 소재들이 그려졌다. 민화가 담고 있는 의미를 보면, 장수(長壽)ㆍ부귀(富貴)ㆍ다남(多男)ㆍ성애(性愛) 등을 바라는 인간의 근원적 소망을 상징으로 표현하여 민중의 삶에 위로와 기쁨을 주었다. 또한 민화에 등장하는 다양한 소재는 인간이 공유하는 보편적 정신으로, 상징들이며 집단무의식의 내용인 원형을 이해하는 것으로 통합된 자기(self)를 발견하게 해준다. 민화의 상징들은 집단무의식의 원형을 형상화하고 있으며 그 내용이 보편성을 띠고 있으므로 모든 인간 심리에 숨겨있는 감정을 고양시키는 힘을 가지고 있다. 그러므로 이러한 상징들은 한국인의 행복한 삶에 대한 보편적 정서를 반영한 것으로 예술치료적 가치를 가지고 있다는 것을 의미할 수 있다.
