The purpose of this paper is to measure the changes of the total factor productivity(TFP) in Korean pharmaceutical firms and analyzes the effects of R&D on TFP growth during the period 2003∼2013. The sample comprises of 31 Korean pharmaceutical firms which were listed on the stock market. To measure the TFP, translog multilateral index method was used. The results show that the annual growth rate of TFP in Korean pharmaceutical firms was around 3.75% and the contribution rate of TFP to the output growth was 44.70% during 2003∼2013 period. The annual growth rate of TFP before the global financial crisis was 11.29% and it was -3.78% after the financial crisis. The contribution rate of TFP to the output growth before the financial crisis was 67.81%, but had decreased substantially after the financial crisis. The regression results show that R&D investment has significantly positive effects on the growth of TFP, and R&D stock elasticity of TFP was estimated to be 0.219.

본 연구에서는 국내 제약산업 기업자료를 이용하여 제약기업들의 총요소생산성을 비교‧분석하고, 이를 기초로 제 약기업의 R&D투자가 총요소생산성에 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 분석기간은 2003년부터 2013년까지이고, 분석대 상기업은 31개 제약기업이며, 개별기업의 재무자료는 KIS-VALUE DB에서 추출하였다. 분석의 결과 총요소생산성은 연평균 3.75% 증가하였으며, 산출증가에 대한 총요소생산성의 기여도는 44.70%로 추정된다. 이를 두 기간으로 나누어 보면, 글로벌 금융위기 이전의 총요소생산성의 증가율은 11.29%이고 산출에 대한 기여도는 67.81%이다. 그러나 금융위기 이후 5년간 총요소생산성은 연평균 3.78% 감소하였다. 총투입은 지 속적으로 증가하였으나 총요소생산성이 크게 하락하여 산출이 증가하지 못한 것이다. 전형적인 고비용‧저효율 구 조를 보여주고 있다. 회귀분석 결과를 보면 R&D스톡은 총요소생산성에 유의한 양(+)의 영향을 미치고 있으며, R&D스톡의 총요소생산 성에대한 탄력성은 0.219로 매우 높게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 연구개발투자가 저조한 한국 제약기업의 경우 R&D스톡이 매우 적은 상태이기 때문에 R&D투자를 통하여 R&D스톡을 조금만 증가시켜도 생산성 증가효과가 매 우 크게 나타날 것이라는 점을 시사한다.
