This paper explores what values, ways of thinking, and action patterns related to civility needed for today’s Korean society should there be, while considering various preceding research on generational conflicts as well as generational gaps visualized from the existing social condition and social phenomenon in Korea. This paper proposes the possibility of making a co-existing generational culture by adding humanistic solutions to the existing study results. Generational conflicts, one aspect of Korea's social conflicts, are gradually increasing in an apprehensive way and degree. Generational problems provoke social conflicts by hindering the communications between members from each sector of modern society. Resolving a conflict in civil society is a common task for all the citizens. What matters in the present situation is to secure both the complementary relationship and the co-existence of inter-generations based on civility. By the way, the nature of generational gaps and conflicts are directly connected to culture because it is also a source of expressing all the human consciousness and values. Therefore, this paper searches for solutions of generational conflicts, by means of relating the double-sidedness of culture as well. It generally develops the discussion mainly on the plan for the complementary relationship and co-existence between ‘youth generation’ and ‘old age generation’, and this paper suggests a face-to-face dialogue and the role-playing activity done by changing positions as a solution. This is the major issue for the cultural life of generations.

이 논문은 한국의 기존 사회실태와 사회현상에서 가시화된 세대차이 및 세대갈등에 대한 다양한 선행 연구들을 바탕으로, 오늘날 한국사회에서 요구되는 시민성과 관련한 가치관 ‧ 사유방식 ‧ 행위양식이 어떠해야 하는가에 관해 탐구한다. 그리고 기존의 사회과학적 연구 성과들에다 인문학적 측면에서의 해법을 첨가하는 방식을 취하면서 상생의 세대문화를 이루어갈 수 있을 가능성이 무엇인지를 제시한다. 한국사회의 여러 갈등 양상들 가운데 하나인 세대갈등은 점차 우려스러운 방향과 수준으로 진행되고 있다. 세대차이는 급변하는 현대사회의 각 부문에서 구성원들 간의 소통을 가로막아 사회갈등을 일으킨다. 시민사회에서 이런 갈등을 풀어내는 것은 시민들 모두의 공통된 과제이다. 우리의 현재적 화두는 시민성 구현을 통한 세대 간의 상보 ‧ 상생이다. 그런데 세대차이 및 갈등의 특성은 곧 인간의 모든 의식과 가치가 표출되는 원천이 되는 것이기 때문에 문화와도 직결된다. 따라서 이 논문은 세대갈등의 해결 방안을 문화의 양면성과도 관련지어 모색한다. 이 논문은 전반적으로 ‘청년세대와 노인세대’의 상보 ‧ 상생의 방안을 위주로 논의를 전개하며, 그 해법으로써 대면 대화와 처지를 바꾸어 실천해보기를 제시한다. 이것이 곧 세대적 문화생활의 핵심 내용이다.
