우리나라의 관광산업은 1970년대 외래관광객 유치를 통한 외화획득산업 이래2014년 현재에는 미래 저성장시대에 대비한 고부가가치 산업으로 자리매김하고 있다. 박근혜 정부에서도 관광산업 활성화를 정부의 핵심정책으로 선정 하였고, 문화체육관광부에서 관광 불법행위에 적극 대처하기 위한 일 방안으로 “관광경찰제도 도입”을 추진하였다. 이처럼 관광경찰제도는 정부의 관광산업의 효과를 증진시키고 정부의 관련기관 간의 융복합적인 정책에 대표적인 성격을 가지는 관광치안 정책으로서 관광경찰제도의활성화가 필요한 시점이라 할 수 있다. 이에 이 연구에서는 관광경찰의 활성화 요인 분석을 통하여 향후 활성화 방안을제시하고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 외래관광객의 지역적수요, 거버넌스적 관광치안정책, 경찰배치와 운영, 관광경찰의 배치 효과를 중심으로요인을 중심으로 살펴보았으며, 향후 관광경찰의 활성화 방안으로서 관광경찰의 지역적 확대방안, 융복합적인 관광정책의 확대, 관광경찰의 배치와 운영방향, 관광경찰의배치효과를 제시하였다.
