이 연구는 지하철 범죄의 특성과 지하철 경찰대의 문제점을 통하여 지하철 내 범죄를 예방하기 위한 지하철 경찰대 의 개선방안을 제시하고자한 연구이다. 일반적으로지하철 범죄는 지하철 내에서 발생하는 범죄로서 공간적인 특성 을 가지고 있으나, 실제 지하철 범죄는 협소한 공간적인 특성으로 인하여 많은 문제점을 가지고 있다. 지하철 범죄는 공간이 협소하기 때문에 지하철 범죄는 다른 범죄에 비하여 범죄에대한 두려움이 높으며, 범죄자의 의도가 명확하고, 좁은 공간으로 인하여 감시자의부재가 발생하며, 증거 수집이 어려운 특성을 가지고 있다. 특히, 우리나라의 지하철 범죄를 예방하기 위한 지하철 경찰대는 지상에서는 112순찰차가 3분 이내에 도착하는 신 고적응체제가 효과적으로 가동되고 있으나 지하철의 경우는 신속한 신고적응체제를 유지하는데 어려움이 많이 있 으며, 지하철 경찰대직원의 좋지 않은 업무환경이 범죄예방을 어렵게 하는 요인이 되고 있다. 따라서, 이 연구에서는 제한된 경찰활동의 한계를 인정하고 지하철 범죄가 가지는특성을 고려하여 환경설계를 통한 범죄예방활동(CPTED)을 적용하여 지하철 범죄를예방하고자 한다. CPTED은 물리적 환경을 개선하여 범죄를 예방하고자 하는 범죄예방기법으로서기존에는 건축물을 중심으로 적용 시키고자 하였으나, 이 연구에서는 그 활용범위를넓혀 지하철 객차 및 지하철 역사에 적용시켜 범죄를 예방하고자 하는 방법을 본 연구에서 제안해 보았다.
