The general purpose of the speech-debate education at the university level lies in the enhancement of communicative competence. However, its ultimate goal is not to increase communication skills but to develop both the problem-solving competence and the democratic civic life. In this regard, in order for us to provide the debate education that can contribute to resolving various social conflicts, it is, in addition to the pros and cons of discussion, necessary to connect the results of discussion to the problem-solving activities. This sort of speech-debate education model helps students to think analytically as well as critically and to resolve social conflicts in a democratic manner.

대학에서의 발표-토론교육은 대부분 의사소통 능력의 향상에 맞추어진다. 하지만 의사소통교육의 궁극적 목적은 단지 소통이 아니라 소통을 통한 다양한 문제해결능력의 증진 및 민주적 시민형성에 있다. 다양한 사회적 갈등을 해결하는 데 기여하는 토론교육을 하려면 기존의 찬반토론에 덧붙여 토론 결과를 수렴하는 문제해결 발표를 연계하는 것이 필요하다. 이러한 사회적 갈등 해결을 위한 발표-토론 교육 모델은 개인의 분석적, 비판적 사고능력 계발과 더불어 민주적 방식의 사회적 갈등해결에도 도움이 된다.
