Recently the Inscriptions of the Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs in Ulsan were thoroughly investigated. This article aims at presenting a new reading and interpretation on them and indicating what to pay attention to when we use them as historical records. The Inscriptions have been engraved intermittently since the Jung-go Period of Silla, 6th century AD. So they can be told as visitors’ books made by a lot of people for about 1,500 years. Especially the Inscriptions of the Jung-go Period are very important historical material in that they can supplement the written material such as Samguksagi.

본 논문은 최근 새로 정밀조사가 이루어진 울주 천전리 각석의 명문 자료에 대한 새로운 판독 과 해석을 제시하고, 향후 이 자료들을 연구에 활용하려고 할 때 주의해야 할 점들을 지적한 것 이다. 명문은 대체로 신라 중고기부터 현대에 이르기까지 많은 사람들이 천전리 일대를 찾아왔 다가 자신들의 방문 사실을 기록한 것들인데, 특별히 시기가 올라가는 중고기의 명문들은 부족 한 문헌 자료를 보완할 수 있다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지니는 것이라 할 수 있다.
