This study is about a method of teaching and learning Korean vocabulary through the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol(SIOP) on Korean as a Second language(KSL). The SIOP has been known as a successful approach for English as a Second Language(ESL) so it can be appropriately applied to KSL for teaching and learning vocabulary. The SIOP model is composed of Preparation, Instruction, and Review/Evaluation and lead to effective classes for Korean language learners. This study deals with Korean vocabulary related to Korean Thanksgiving day 'Chuseok' and expects to effective KSL class with SIOP model. It provides a lesson plan for intermediated level learners that interactively engaged in classes. The SIOP model applied to KSL are several strengths in KSL classroom: (1) integrated content and language development, (2)effective teaching and leaning Korean vocabulary with authentic materials, (3) successful interaction between instructors and learners, (4) linguistically and culturally diverse class environment, (5) valid and reliable assessment, (6) self-reflection and feedback with ease, and (7) objective criteria for communication between instructors and researchers in KSL.

본 연구는 SIOP(Sheltered Instructio Observation Protocol) 모델을 활용하여 한국어 어휘 교육의 실례를 보인 것이다. SIOP 모델은 외국어로서의 영어 교육에서 언어와 내용의 통 합적 교수법으로 성공적인 결과를 가져왔다. SIOP 모델은 준비, 교수-학습, 복습과 평가 로 구성되는데 한국어 어휘 교육에도 효과적으로 적용될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국 전 통 명절의 하나인 ‘추석’에 관련된 어휘 교수 방안(중급 단계)을 SIOP 모델에 적용하여 제시하였다. SIOP 모델을 한국어 교육에 적용하면 다음과 같은 효과가 있다: 1)학습자의 내용 이해와 언어 기능적 향상이 동시에 이루어진다, 2)실제 사용하는 자료를 활용하여 효과적인 한국어 어휘 교육을 진행할 수 있다, 3) 교수자와 학습자 간의 상호 교류가 활 발하게 이루어질 수 있다, 4) 언어적으로 문화적으로 다양한 수업 환경을 제공할 수 있다, 5) 타당하고 신뢰성 있는 평가를 제공할 수 있다, 6) 자기 반영과 피드백을 용이하게 할 수 있다, 7) 한국어 교수법의 연구자 및 교수자들 간의 의사소통을 위해 객관적인 기준을 제공할 수 있다.
