The amount of municipal wastes has dramatically increased due to the rapid industrialization and the increase of population in Korea. As a result, the capacity of landfill site has become increasingly saturated. In Japan, the seashore waste landfills can contain approximately 25% of the total wastes, and the expenses for the construction of seashore waste landfills is relatively inexpensive compared to the ordinary ground landfills. Furthermore, it is possible to obtain a vast ground close to the land after the completion of waste landfilling accompanied by a valid technical and management systems. The seashore waste landfill would be very useful for safer and more economical landfilling in the case of small country like Korea.

우리나라는 급속한 산업화와 인구증가로 도시생활폐기물의 양이 꾸준히 증가하고 있으며 폐기물의 최종 처분을 위한 매립지는 현재 그 용량이 포화상태에 이르고 있다. 일본의 해양폐기물매립지는 전체의 약 25% 용량의 폐기물을 매립하고 있으며, 해양폐기물매립지를 건설하는데 필요한 경비도 육상폐기물매립 지에 비해 비교적 저렴하기 때문에 유효한 기술 및 관리 체제가 동반된다면 폐기물의 매립이 완료된 후 육 지에서 가까운 곳에 광대한 토지를 얻을 수 있다는 장점도 있다. 보다 안전하게, 보다 경제적으로 매립지 를 정비해가기 위한 해결책의 하나로 국토 면적이 작은 우리나라에서는 해양폐기물매립지가 매우 유용할 것으로 기대된다.
