The concept of sustainability has dramatically widened its scope of measurement options, and leading organizations in various industries are grappling the importance of sustainability issues. But, there is no consensus on a common index for the assessment of sustainability in convention and exhibition industry. This paper recognizes that assessing sustainability performance has to be conceptually based as well as practically useful in Korean convention and exhibition industry context. The purpose of this study is to assess whether a set of sustainability index, which has been developed and used in tourism, hospitality industries and other general businesses, is appropriate to apply into Korean convention and exhibition industry. The index is adapted from the measures of a sustainable framework of triple bottom line —social, economic, environmental sustainability, and the measures of corporate social responsibility. In order to develop such objective indicators, this study firstly assesses various stakeholders’ perceived appropriateness of sustainability index by conducting online survey. Result showed that multiple stakeholders in industries, governments, and academia generally supported that the suggested index is appropriate to assess the sustainability of Korean convention and exhibition industry. Yet, their perceptions vary depending on the type of their organizations. This study can serve as a starting-point for future study to refine a set of sustainability index and apply it into the Korean convention and exhibition industry.

“지속가능성”이란 용어는 환경적 측면에서 처음 사용되어오다가 사회적, 경제적 측 면까지 포함하게 되었고 현재 이 용어는 전시컨벤션산업을 포함한 모든 산업분야에서 주요 이슈로 강조되고 있다. 따라서 현재는 정부, 산업 종사자를 비롯하여 다양한 이해 관계자까지 지속가능성의 중요성을 인지하기 시작한 상황이다. 이러한 배경을 토대로 본 연구는 전시컨벤션산업에서 활용될 수 있는 지속가능성 평가 지표를 개발하기 위한 탐색적 연구를 수행하고자 하였다. 연구를 위한 데이터는 2014년 국내 전시컨벤션산업 이해관계자들을 대상으로 온라인 설문을 통해 수집되었다. 설문은 환경적, 사회적, 경 제적 지속가능성 대한 평가항목의 국내 전시컨벤션산업의 도입 적합성을 묻는 것으로 구성되어 있었다. 수집한 데이터를 분석한 결과, 세 개 측면의 지속가능성에 대한 적합 도에 대한 평가가 대체적으로 높게 나타났다. 또한, 응답자들의 소속 유형에 따라 세 개 측면의 지속가능성에 대한 적합도에 대한 평가 및 인식이 다르다는 것을 알 수 있 었다. 하지만 근무경력이나 업무유형에 따른 차이는 존재하지 않음을 파악할 수 있었 다. 이러한 본 연구는 국내 전시컨벤션산업에 필요한 환경적, 사회적, 경제적 지속가능 평가항목의 초안을 제시하였고 보다 적합한 평가항목 개발에 대한 향후 연구방향을 제시하고자 하였다.
