Korea’s interest in the exhibition industry stems back to the late Joseon Dynasty. The modern-day exhibition industry began to develop in Korea after the country gained independence from Japan, when Korean national policies for industrialization and trade were in effect. Compared to the growth of Korea’s exhibition industry, there has not been much study on it, nor on its history and origin. This study attempts to chronologically review the origin and development process of Korea’s exhibition industry dating from the late Joseon Dynasty through the 1960s and 1980s, especially focused on the exhibitions managed by KOTRA from its birth in 1962. This study is significant in that it identifies the origins of Korean exhibitions according to exhibition type, be they domestic or international, and classifies and conceptualizes the development stages of the Korean exhibition industry according to chronological characters.

한국에서 전시산업에 대한 관심은 조선시대 후기에 들어 나타나기 시작하였다. 그러 나 근대적 의미의 전시산업이 발전되기 시작한 것은 광복 이후 한국이 산업 근대화 및 수출입국 정책을 추진하면서부터였다. 국내 전시산업의 성장에 비해 전시산업에 대한 연구는 아직도 미흡한 수준에 머물러 있으며, 특히 전시산업의 역사나 기원에 대한 연 구는 거의 이루어지고 있지 않는 상황에서 본 연구는 조선시대 후기에서 일제 식민기 를 지나 1960년대 이후 1980년대까지 한국 전시산업의 기원과 그 발전과정을 가능한 한 연대기적으로 살펴보았다. 특히 1960년대 이후의 경우 KOTRA가 수행한 국내외 전 시사업을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 본 연구는 전시산업의 핵심적 요소인 전시회의 유형별로 한국이 국내 및 해외에서 개최 또는 참가한 전시회의 기원을 파악하고, 시대별 특징의 개념화를 통해 발전 과정 을 정리하였다는데 의의가 있다.
