Alexander Calder, throughout his life, relentlessly studied shapes, abstractions, motions, and spaces with numerous styles of projects such as wooden sticks, wires, paintings, drawings, theater stages, mobiles, stabiles or even circus performances. This research aimed at studying Calder’s late works, especially the geometric characteristics of his late stabiles, and applying them to fashion design to expand the creativity of fashion thinking. Geometric characteristics of Calder’s late stabiles were analysed as similar repeat units, atypical traits of strong sharp lines, and curve shapes of nature. These characteristics are used as patterns on five different fashion designs. The conclusions from this study are as follows. First of all, possibilities to expand the design styles by emphasizing the detailed elements of sculpture referenced from Calder’s stabiles are observed. Secondly, motifs drawn from simple yet three dimensional stabiles can be applied to the surfaces of fabrics to seamlessly match the curves of the human body while suggesting many styles of patterns as unique elements. Thirdly, the spatial styles of Calder’s stabiles, which vary with the viewing angles, can be combined with techniques to show colors of seams of unfinished surfaces and inner fabrics to create visually three-dimensional effects. Fourthly, inner clothes with unfinished seams creates contrast in color with outer clothes. Fifthly, one of the outstanding characteristics of Calder’s, restrained use of color to create contrasts, can be applied to fashion design in a similar way. Lastly, neoprene fabrics are good fit to deliver shapes and three-dimensional elements as well as expressing some weights.

알렉산더 칼더는 일생 동안 서커스 퍼포먼스부터 나무·철사 조각, 회화, 드로잉, 공연무대 제작, 모빌과 스테빌 조각 등 각양각색의 작업들을 통해 추상, 움직임, 공간 등 조형적 탐구를 끊임없이 한, 현대의 주목 받는 예술가이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 이러한 알렉산더 칼더의 작품 중, 후기 스테빌 조각에서 나타나는 조형적인 특성을 분석하여 그 미적 특성을 패션디자인에 응용함으로써 창의적인 패션디자인의 영역을 확대하는데 그 목적이 있다. 칼더의 스테빌 후기 조각 작품에서 나타난 조형적 특성은 비슷한 단위형태의 반복, 날카로운 직선 느낌이 강한 비정형성, 자연과 동·식물을 모티브로 한 곡선 등으로 분석되었으며 이를 바탕으로 총 5착장의 작품을 제작하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 스테빌에서 도출한 조각의 조형성을 구체적인 디테일 요소로 부각시켜 패션디자인의 표현영역을 확대시킬 수 있는 가능성을 확인하였다. 둘째, 간결하면서도 입체적인 조형미를 지닌 형태의 스테빌에서 모티브를 도출하여 의상의 표면에 재구성한 결과 인체의 곡선과 어우러지면서도 독특한 형태요소로 다양한 패턴 구성의 제시하였다. 셋째, 감상하는 각도와 위치에 따라 다양하게 보이는 스테빌의 공간적 특징을 원단의 안감과 겉감을 구분 없이 사용하여 다양한 시각성의 확보로 인해 입체감을 더욱 부각시켰다. 넷째, 원단의 마감처리를 하지 않고 시접의 컬러를 노출시킴으로써 의상 표면에 사용된 컬러와의 대비를 보여주는 효과를 얻었다. 다섯째, 알렉산더 칼더의 스테빌 조각의 특성 중 하나인 제한된 최소한의 컬러로 대비의 극대감과 조형적인 요소를 부각시키는 절제된 감각은 패션 디자인에 있어서도 동일하게 구현하였다. 여섯째, 네오프랜 원단을 사용함으로써 디자인 표현에 있어서 조형적인 입체 형태를 구조적으로 잘 형성할 수 있었으며 무게감을 표현하는 효과 또한 얻을 수 있었다.
