This study can be described as a cultural study through oral life-history. Oral life-history is a footprint (memory) covered with a cloud of dust over a long period of time as another footprint left on the historical road. The footprint appears after the dust clears as an oral statement becomes an oral history. In addition, a person’s life becomes an oral life-history through this process. This study examines changes in photographic and marriage cultures while investigating the formation of modern photographic studios and wedding halls through oral life-history. There have been no previous studies clarifying the close relationship between photographic studios and wedding halls, and furthermore there have been no such studies from the perspective of oral life-history. Therefore, this study extends the field of research on oral life-history. Kim Nam-yong (김남용), the father of Kim Dong-uk (김동욱), began to learn photography from a Japanese person in the mid-1930s and then opened a photographic studio in Gilsan (길산; 吉山), Seocheon-gun (서천 군; 舒川郡), Chungcheonnam-do (충청남도; 忠淸南道) in the late 1930s. At that time, there was an increase in Koreans who operated photographic studios nationwide. When the economy improved in Janghang (장항; 長 項) more than Gilsan, Kim Nam-yong moved to Janghang in 1946. In Janghang, wedding ceremonies had been held in the gardens of brides’ families or churches until the 1960s. Therefore, Kim Nam-yong frequently visited these places to take photographs. Gradually, more and more brides and grooms wanted to have a small wedding ceremony in the photographic studio and then to have their photograph taken there. Subsequently, photographic studios were used as a wedding hall when a wedding ceremony was held. As described above, Kim Dong-uk shows how the Mirami Photographic Studio/Wedding Hall in Janghang has changed alongside the development of modern photographic and marriage cultures through oral life-history. This study shows that modern photographic studios changed to wedding halls as they became preferred as a wedding venue instead of gardens of brides’ families or churches. As the marriage ceremony has been recognized as the most important procedure among marriage rituals since photographs have been popularized, photographs have been regarded as important to this marriage ceremony. A marriage ceremony is held to socially announce the marriage, and the original photograph taken at the time proves the marriage. Based on this concept, it is shown that photographic studios changed to wedding halls through the medium of photographs. Previous studies have reported that Western marriage ceremonies were prevalent in rural areas in the 1960s and wedding halls in the 1970s. However, they failed to demonstrate how wedding halls became prevalent in rural areas. I argue that the formation of the Mirami Wedding Hall is a clear example of how wedding halls were popularized in rural areas in the 1970s.
