The rapid globalization of the 21st century has changed international relationships and relations between the state and individuals. Since then, for the last twenty years or so, South Korean society has been accepting labor migrants and marriage migrants from other Asian countries in order to solve its social problems such as decrease in population, low birth rate, and labor shortage. On the contrary, the Mongolian society has been exporting laborer and migrant women to other countries including South Korea since the end of the 1980s with the introduction of the capitalist system. Mongolian marriage migrant women in Korea tend to maintain their Mongolian cultural identity even after they change their nationality. The concept of cosmopolitanism is required in understanding their life situations of cultural hybridity. And, it is critical to consider Mongolian social contexts, which play a great role in forming their cultural identities. I conducted in-depth interviews with Mongolian marriage migrant women in Korea in their mother tongue in order to explore reasons for marriage migration, the migration process, and ways to maintain relationships with their Mongolian family. I find that we can overcome the prejudice of nationalism by taking the view of cosmopolitanism. That is, Korean society needs to consider marriage migrants as having cosmopolitan citizenship as well as national citizenship.

21세기에 접어들어 세계화는 국가의 성격과 개인의 생활을 모두 바꾸어 놓았다. 오늘 날 한국사회는 노동력 부족, 인구 감소, 저출산 등의 사회적 문제를 세계시장에서 해결하 기 위해 타국으로부터 이주민을 적극적으로 수용하고 있다. 한편 몽골사회는 1980년대 말부터 사회주의체제가 붕괴하고 자본주의체제를 받아들이면서 세계화의 조류에 합류하 게 된다. 그 결과 몽골사회는 타국으로 진출하는 노동이주민과 여성결혼이주민이 증가하 게 된다. 이와 같은 세계화의 격랑 속에서 한국으로 이주해온 몽골결혼이주여성들은 비록 국적을 바꾸었을지라도 여전히 몽골적 정체성도 함께 지니고 있다. 그들의 이러한 세계시 민적 정체성을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 일국주의를 넘어 세계시민주의적 관점이 요구 된다. 바꾸어 말하면 그들의 정체성 형성에 큰 역할을 한 몽골사회의 체제변화와 정체성 에 대한 고려가 필요하다. 그런 까닭에 본 논문에서는 국내 몽골결혼이주여성들의 삶을 잘 이해하기 위해 몽골어 심층면접 방법을 도입하여 연구했다. 연구 범위는 결혼이주 동 기, 이주 과정, 이주 후 친정가족과의 관계 등을 분석하는데 집중했다. 이러한 분석을 통 해 세계시민적 정체성을 지니고 있는 몽골결혼이주여성과 관련해 한국사회에 세계시민주 의 관점이 요청된다는 사실을 밝혔다.
