The blind organized themselves as a strong professional guild of fortune-tellers during the Chosun dynasty and were transformed to the profession of masseurs in the colonial period. In a society with little support for minority populations, the reserved profession of anma (massage) in Korea as an alternative form of medicine seems very conspicuous, especially considering the strong competition between Western and Eastern medicine. This successful upholding of the profession has been possible due to the strong group identity of the blind organization such as the guild of blind fortune-tellers, which was inherited by the organization of blind masseurs. I argue that this strong group identity was built through the collective memory and oral tradition of the blind: firstly, the special profession of the blind had been protected by the state from traditional times; secondly, when the right to their profession was threatened, the blind constantly fought for their claim to and protection of their right. Therefore, the oral tradition of the blind played an important role in the formation of the right of the blind in Korea to the profession.

시각장애인들은 조선시대까지는 점복업집단으로, 식민지시대 이후에는 안마업을 중심 으로 한 직업집단으로 강력한 정체성을 유지하고 있다. 약자에 대한 보호가 일천한 한국 사회에서 시각장애인의 안마사업권에 대한 권리를 약자집단이 유지해오고 있는 것은 의 료계의 경쟁을 고려해볼 때 상당히 놀라운 사실이라 볼 수 있다. 이런 권리의 유지에는 시각장애인의 강력한 집단정체성이 기여했으며, 본연구자는 구술문화의 전통이 집합기억 을 통해 집합정체성 형성에 이바지했다고 주장한다. 이에는 시각장애인 구술문화의 대표 서사, 왕이 시각장애인의 직업을 보호해주었다는 것과 불의한 경우 지속적으로 시각장애 인들이 집단적으로 저항했다는 두 주장이 집합기억 형성의 핵심적 기제였다. 또한 시각장 애인의 구술문화에는 다양한 형식적 특성이 존재하는데, 은어의 광범위한 사용, 사실의 재조합, 집합기억을 통한 정체성의 형성이 대표적이라고 볼 수 있다. 본연구자는 시각장 애인의 구술문화에 대한 분석을 통해 사회적 약자집단의 권리가 단순히 국제규범이 하향 식으로 주어지는 것이 아니라 풍부한 문화적 전통을 통해 형성되었음을 밝히고자 했다.
