Modern society depends on high-tech science and technology, and the 21st century is the era of brain science. Brain science change not only science and technology but also the art. Under these circumstances, mirror neurons are significant. It is the most significant discoveries of neuroscience being evaluated. A mirror neuron is a neuron that fires both when an animal acts and when the animal observes the same action performed by another. The mirror neurons are important for understanding the actions of other people and learning new skills by imitation. The imitation by mirror neurons has been the concept in theater quite a while ago. Watching the play, the audience can experience the emotional changes affected by imitation. Today, advances in brain science are giving the new challenges and opportunities to theater by providing a new story about the human mind and behavior. Therefore, the therapeutic properties of theater have been in existence since ancient times should be acknowledged. In addition, it is responsible for contributing to mental health.

현대사회는 첨단 과학 기술에 크게 의존하고 있으며, 21세기 과학기술의 핵심적인 연구 분야로 인식되고 있는 뇌 과학의 시대이다. 이는 과학기술에만 영향을 주는 것이 아니라 사회과학과 인문학, 심지어 예술까지도 변화 시키고 있다. 오늘날 예술 분야의 중요한 학문적 논제로 등장하게 된 뇌 과학으로 인해 예술은 과학과는 상이한 원리들에 근거하는 창조적 행위라는 고정된 시각에서 벗어나 인간의 마음에서 비롯되는 현상과 작용까지도 물 리적으로 해명하고자 하는 풍토가 자리 잡아가고 있다. 이러한 배경에서 우리는 신경 과학의 가장 획기적인 발견으로 평가받고 있는 거울신경에 주목할 필요가 있다. 거울신경은 다른 사람의 움직임이나 동작을 보고 나도 모르게 따라하는 현상으로 관찰자의 뇌가 피관찰자의 행 위를 마치 ‘거울처럼’ 그대로 반영하는 것을 이른다. 이는 인간이 다른 사람의 행동을 관찰, 모방하고 이에 공감 하며 그러한 행동을 하는 사람의 의도까지도 알 수 있게 되는 과정을 설명해 준다. 그런데 거울신경을 통해 확인되는 모방의 문제는 이미 오래전부터 연극의 메카니즘으로 자리해온 개념이었다. 관객은 연극을 관람하는 동안 모방 활동을 통해 정서적 변화를 경험하고 영향을 받는다. 오늘날 뇌 과학의 발전 은 인간의 마음과 행동에 대한 새로운 이야기를 제공함으로써 연극에 새로운 도전과 기회를 주고 있다. 따라서 삶의 모방인 연극은 태고부터 지녀온 치유적 속성과 가치를 인정받고 정신치료에 이바지할 책임이 있다 하겠다.
