This study aims to research participation motivation and constraint factor of social dance among adult males and females who have been participating in social dance club as leisure. Towards that end, this study did in-depth interview for 12 weeks on 11 subjects doing the club activity in Seoul. Phenomenological method as qualitative research was used and intentional sampling method was applied to selecting subjects. As a result, the findings of the study are outlined as follows. Participation motivation of social dance is ‘suggestion of acquaintance’, ‘interest of dance itself’ and ‘their own will’. Constraint factor of it is ‘physical contact with the opposite sex strangers’, ‘education period’, and ‘old-fashioned image’. Social dance concentrating on clubs can be the power of popularization and limit of specialization.

본 연구의 목적은 여가활동으로 소셜 댄스에 참여하고 있는 성인 남녀를 대상으로 참여 동기와 제약 요인을 연구하는 데 있다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 2013년 11월부터 12주에 걸쳐 서울 지역에서 소셜 댄스에 참여하는 성인 11명을 심층 면접하였다. 연구방법으로는 질적 연구방법 중 현상학적 접근방법을 사용하였고 참여자 선정방법은 의도적 표집방법을 사용하였다. 위 연구과정을 거쳐 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 소셜 댄스의 참여 동기는 ‘지인의 권유’, ‘춤 자체에 대한 흥미’, ‘본인의 의지’이고, 제약 요인으로는 ‘낯선 이성과의 신체 접촉’, ‘교육기간’, ‘구식 이미지’로 나타났다. 동호회 중심의 소셜 댄스는 대중화의 동력이자 전문화의 한계라 할 수 있다.
